Development of Improved Indian Arjun Complete: DRDO

Yeah, they tested Lahat from Arjun but IA didn't want that, now they need this. Policy makers of IA, the most important part of Indian armed forces lag behind in strategic thinking in terms of defence productions. When it comes to indigenous system they want something formidible but as far as foreign specially Russian systems are concerned they can make any compromise.

Arjun mk II and T-90M are incomparable, still they ordered 1000 T-90M while Arjun is a generation ahead of it. :frown:

I dont think at the time they were placing orders,Arjun Mk-2 was anywhere in the picture,I think that can be be a terrible setback if they had waited this long for Mk-2 to get developed, given DRDO's reputation of time management.

No what I meant is why is the IA wanting now and why they did not want it before. IIRC even MkI was able to fire LAHAT.

Thats something no one will ever understand, why they didn't want it when offered, why they want it now. Thats what I tried to explain in my previous post.

May be thats why they lag behind IN and IAF in terms of modernization.

No, if Arjun had some teething problems so are T-90S. But IA went for it while they made no compromise on Arjun. There is no reason I could find why an army ordered a tank which is being 'outruns, outguns' by another indigenous tank. They signed the deal for new 1000 tanks (in 2008/9) before they went for comparative trial against Arjun, what DRDO sought for long time. They needed Israeli expert to 'certify' Arjun, thats a shame when IA is operating tanks for so many years. The experts named Arjun as 'desert ferrari'!! lol

given DRDO's reputation of time management.
What DRDO can do being proved with Arjun mk II as its ready for trails in less than a year after govt approved development of mk II.

Well yes, that was disgusting that they were even not ready for comparative trials before ordering for T-90,given it is also a stripped down version, the possibility of foreign vendors lobbying,or that IA had already made its mind about Arjun as an incompetent junk, anyway what I was talking was that it is not fair to compare between mk-2 and T-90 at that time

Well thats a commendable achievement, hope it can complete every projects in time like this, anyway does mk-2 have any hardkill APS on it.

Arjun mk 1 >> T-90S
Arjun mk 2 >>>> T-90M

:)

Well I sure hope this is true.

T-90M: Prototype version featuring new explosive reactive armour (ERA) Relikt, new 1,200 hp (890 kW) engine, new improved turret and composite armor, new gun, new thermal imaging Catherine-FC from THALES, an enhanced environmental control system supplied by Israel’s Kinetics Ltd for providing cooled air to the fighting compartment, integrated tactical system, satellite navigation and others.

What is the changes to MK 2 that will make it >>>>>>>>>> to T-90M?

OK mate, forget about mk II, even mk I, is way ahead of T-90S thats also proved in comparative trials.

Actually now DRDO got huge experiences in developing cutting edge armaments, so there is no further delays in future systems. I am amazed how fast they are readying the AWACS.

I think you are aware of the upgrades in Arjun mk II, check that with T-90M. You will get it.

Even Arjun mk I got most of these systems except ERA.

I seriously dont know you tell me..

replacing existing German engines and transmission systems with homemade systems.

The Mark-II Arjun will incorporate up to 90 percent of indigenous content, compared with 58 percent in the current model, a DRDO scientist said, and should be ready for induction by 2014.

The Mark-II also will feature superior missile-firing capabilities

This is what I got from the article. Which sounds great its going to be 90% indigenous.

Give me a link and show me..

If you don't know than better search and read more, both about mk I and II. Then compare with T-90S and T-90M.

  • # Volume occupied by the electronics package will be low.
  • # A total of 93 upgrades, including the advanced air defence gun system for firing at attack helicopters. Missiles firing capability to destroy long-range targets and bring down attack helicopters.
  • # Panoramic sight with night vision for the tank's commander. An automatic target tracking system to add accuracy when firing on a moving target.
  • # Explosive reactive armor panel which will comprise explosives in metallic brick form. These bricks will be mounted all round the MBT. When the enemy ammunition hits these bricks, they will explode and retard the energy of the projectile. Tanks armor will not be penetrated.
  • # Improvements in material, fuel injection and filtration technologies will contribute to the reduction in the engine size without compromising on power.
  • # Indian Army has placed an intent for production of 124 Arjun-Mk II tanks.
  • # Phase I, 45 tanks will roll out with 56 upgrades, including the missile firing capability and the commander's panoramic sight with night vision.
  • # Phase II, the remaining 79 tanks, with all the 93 improvements, will come off the assembly line. “By 2013-14, the first batch of around 30 tanks will go out,” Dr. Sivakumar said.
  • # 124 Arjun-Mk II tanks would cost Rs.5,000 crores.

Did you bothered to read the report you posted? Even the first para? Its clearly written that the German engine and transmission will be replaced by indigenous engine and transmissions. So why did you stating that the engine is not ready and 10% non-indigenous systems include the engine?
Calm down buddy. I read the whole article before posting it. It was just that it was hard to believe that we even tested the indigenous engine. DRDO was never so quick. Its like new era is coming. DRDO is well ahead in most of the projects. Also because the engine proposed is 1500 hp and will be smaller and lighter as compared to its contemporary. I just wanted make sure whether it was the same.

I have just one other interesting question running in my mind.... IA wants to modernize its T70 fleet. Is it better to modernize t70 or purchase more arjun ?? In short, is upgraded t70 better than arjun mk1 ?/ I mean we should seriously consider purchasing a couple hundred more arjun because some of the earlier t70 which came in 1970 are way too old. It might be dangerous for our soldier to work in those old machines. Upgrading the latest t70 is fine, but upgrading the oldest one might not be the right idea.

If mk2 goes well, then i think we should we should place order for 300-400 more.
