NEW DELHI - India's state-owned Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) claims that it has completed upgrades on the Arjun tank, replacing existing German engines and transmission systems with homemade systems.

The Mark-II Arjun will incorporate up to 90 percent of indigenous content, compared with 58 percent in the current model, a DRDO scientist said, and should be ready for induction by 2014.

The Mark-II also will feature superior missile-firing capabilities, the scientist added.

Conceived in 1973, the Arjun tank was behind schedule by more than 15 years, resulting in the Indian Army choosing the Russian T-90 tank as its main battle tank. The Arjun had to go through a series of trials and retrials before the Army announced the tank fit for duty. Last year, the Arjun Mark-I had to be put on comparative trials against the Russian T-90, after which the Indian Army finally concluded that the Arjun tank performed to expectations.

Earlier, the Arjun faced problems concerning its fire control system and suspension, and its weight-restricted mobility.

Last year, the Indian Army ordered an additional 124 tanks, bringing the total to 248.

If this is true, lets see if people still talking sh*t know about how indigenous it is.

I think engine for our future MBTs is still not ready. So that remaining 10% will include engine. Can someone provide information about the proposed lighter weight 1500 hp engine for our future mbt ? When it is scheduled to complete ?

What FMBT is doing here? It is about Arjun mk II's engine not FMTB and the report clearly mentioned that it will get an Indian engine replacing German one.

About FMBT, it is not coming before 2020 and all the systems will be Indian.

Don't get angry man...i was just asking when it will get ready ??? Any official schedule ?? Also, I didn't meant FMBT in my post, I meant all our future MBTs including Arjun mk2 and FMBT. Sorry if you interpreted wrong.

Did you bothered to read the report you posted? Even the first para? Its clearly written that the German engine and transmission will be replaced by indigenous engine and transmissions. So why did you stating that the engine is not ready and 10% non-indigenous systems include the engine? Its clearly written in other reports that Arjun mk II is ready for trials and it will start in June this year, but you are still asking when the indigenous engine programme gonna complete!! Don't say that I misinterpreted you here also.

It is clearly mentioned in the article that the Indian engine and Transmission systems are ready to be Used On MKII

I guess they are mentioning about the Lahat ATGM. But wasnt it already there in Mk I ??

Yeah, they tested Lahat from Arjun but IA didn't want that, now they need this. Policy makers of IA, the most important part of Indian armed forces lag behind in strategic thinking in terms of defence productions. When it comes to indigenous system they want something formidible but as far as foreign specially Russian systems are concerned they can make any compromise.

Arjun mk II and T-90M are incomparable, still they ordered 1000 T-90M while Arjun is a generation ahead of it. :frown:

So what missile they are talking about if it is not LAHAT ?
Its LAHAT. LAHAT has a good range of 8-13 km.
