Despite China being thousands of years older than European countries, why do European cities look much older than Chinese cities?
Maybe because the only Chinese city you’ve been to are Shanghai, Shenzhen, Tianjin, or Guangzhou, etc. which are completely modern metropolises. China fails to promote these historical cities and towns internationally. They mostly want to show how developed and modern 21st Century China is, however that would mean less culture.
Even historical capital cities such as Beijing, Xian, Hangzhou, & Nanjing have become modern skyscraper cities, although still retaining a relative amount of traditional old culture. But nonetheless, these historical cities have completely shifted to the future.
So if want to completely feel like in “Ancient China” go to selective smaller cities and towns: (There are so many many more than ones listed below, China is huge!)
***I most recommend going “Suzhou ancient city” since it’s right by Shanghai, and “Pingyao walled city” near Xian. Also, go to “Kyoto,” not in China but in Japan; it has some of the most preserved beautiful Tang China architecture which can not be found in mainland***
{ following Pictures found on Instagram and Google}
Zhujiaojiao ancient watertown
***Fenghuang Ancient city
Kashgar Ancient City in Xinjiang
***Guizhou Ancient City
***Suzhou Ancient City: famous for connecting canal network, over 60 classical garden mansions, and surrounding watertowns. Also a walled city. *Right across modern Suzhou and 30 minutes by high speed train from Shanghai. Must go if you’re in Shanghai area.**** these photos do not do justice, I’ve been there
