But in writing it cant be done because a 'malai' is completely different from 'mazhai'.

I hate it when indians and some Pakistanis call us "desi". If we call ourselves desi, this means associating with indians... that means we can't have our own identity, hindus trying to asert their dominance over us. and that's a dream come true for hindus if they can associate with Pakistan.

I know some Pakistanis happily call themself "desi", but alot of Pakistanis feel offended by this.

So much conflict of identity----fascinating isn't it that how many twist are being put to this simple word.

Desi is a word not only related to indians, pakistanis or bangladeshis----it is used by every single nationality of this world, when they see their countrymen outside of their ethnic place of origin---or outsie of a country----they just use the word in their own language.

This beautiful word is used to relate yourself to where you belong---where you came from----so that you can have an identity and have camraderie amongst those of similiar native backgrounds.

Other than that----people have also used this word in a derogatory term towards others---in a similiar manner as the word being used in britain etc---pak-i.

That is not the only meaning of wilaayat. wilaayat means a city (or an agglomeration thereof) (and probably finds a calque in ville).

"Anybody who is able to read and understand word Desi" is desi. That includes Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis etc.

By the way, "Dais" is an Urdu word that means "Homeland" or "Watan".. the Arabic equivalent is "Watni" and English equivalent is "Native". In General sence, Desi means anybody who belongs to civilization of Indian Subcontinent.

Also the word "Desi" is most probably taken from Urdu because in Urdu the name for homeland is "Dais" while in Hindi it is "Daish". If that had been taken from Indian "Daish", that would've been "Deshi" but its "Desi" and that implies it is an Urdu term instead of Hindi.

Desi originated from the Sanskrit word देश deśa- ("region, province, country"). Its first known usage is in the Natya Shastra (~200 BC).
