Women and girls die prematurely in greater numbers than men

OVER a quarter of all excess female deaths occur in China at birth, says the World Bank's annual World Development Report, published on September 19th. The number has risen since 1990 from 890,000 to 1.1m. These are the numbers of extra girls who would have been born if the normal sex ratio at birth (105 boys to 100 girls) had prevailed in China. It does not do so because of the practice of sex-selective abortion. Aborted girls account for the largest single share of excess female deaths worldwide, but other sorts of death have been growing faster, notably those of women of child-bearing age in Africa. The excess deaths of African women aged 15 to 49 (when compared with female death rates in rich countries) rose by 150% between 1990 and 2008. The number of excess deaths in African countries with high rates of HIV-AIDS increased by 760%. Excess female mortality is shifting from birth inEast Asia to adulthood in Africa.'

Sex selective abortion in Asia, is it a cultural issue(preference of a male child over female)? Or is it related to poverty and wealth, like many other vices of the developing world?

Did the Western World have a similar problem, when they were "developing"?

So let me just ask 1 question:

If China truly is like that, then why is it that the number of adult men decreasing with age, and at over 40 (median age 37) there are less men than women?

For anyone that has actually traveled to China and India, the difference is truly like night and day. Words of a HKer that went to my school; he says that before, he never went to the mainland, and believed what the media said about how bad it was; after he went, he said its a total lie and that Western media should feel ashamed for being liars. He went to India with ISAAC to work with an NGO in Jaipur, Rajastan, and said this:

There's no rain gutters in Jaipur. There's no sewers. People sh!t on the street. There are flys, insects, worms and garbage everywhere. The rickshaw driver was supposed to charge him 60 rupees to take him to the NGO office, but asked 400. The slums have no named streets or districts; instead, they're called Sector 1, 2, etc. Cows are everywhere and block the roads. You can't hit them with the car, so you have to wait for them to move. Sometimes Indians will help you, but most of the time they are used to it. The corruption is so bad, you have to pay protection fee to criminals to give charity. He gave up after 6 weeks.

Brother your country is hidden from world, no one knows that the data here is correct or not. Anything china speaks is spoken by government, And we know " Government lies".

Any data given by independent agencies is correct in terms of all nation except china. They can just speculate the datas, as they are now allowed to go inside china.

Yep you're right.

The government is actually understating China's development level so we can make more money from UN aid and to reduce the "China threat" theory.

China's actual GDP may be 40% higher than the reported value.

And are you denying that there's no rain gutters in Jaipur? Are you denying that there's no sewers? There's no insects flying around? No garbage? Rickshaw drivers do not try to trick you? What India are you living in?

Those masses of flesh are not human in actual, just ignore the figures in that form. Can anybody remember what happened in that stage?

Sex-selective abortion is a major problem in China. There's no point in denying that. It's outrageous we still have a policy which results in abortions of our own girls in favor of importation of foreign brides.

One-child policy was never supposed to be permanent but the policymakers back then probably didn't foresee the lobbying power of a huge bureaucracy created simply to enforce the one-child policy.

I've said this before and I'm going to say it again. Someone need to plant a bomb at HQ of National Population and Family Planning Commission to remind them China's future is more important than their jobs.

Wow thats a new information for me....In India Family Planning bureaucracy is the weakest of all. Other than putting up some posters advocating small family and distributing condoms etc they are pretty much powerless.
