Dalai Lama's nephew killed while walking road in Palm Coast

Jigme K. Norbu had been walking to bring awareness to Tibetans' struggle for independence from China.

The nephew of the most recognized figure in Buddhism was killed Monday while walking along a Florida highway in an attempt to draw attention to the struggle of Tibetans to gain their independence from China.

Jigme Norbu, 45, of Bloomington, Ind., was the nephew of the Dalai Lama. Norbu was struck and killed by an SUV about 7:30 p.m. on State Road A1A, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Few details about the crash were revealed.

Norbu had been on what was called a Valentine's Day "Walk for Tibet" that was to begin in St. Augustine and end in West Palm Beach. Tibetans have sought independence from China for more than 50 years.

Norbu was the son of Taktser Rinpoche, brother of the Dalai Lama.

The Dalai Lama, born Tenzin Gyatso, is the leader of the Gelugpa branch of Buddhism. He is the latest in a long line of leaders of the faith thought to have been reincarnated in order to lead others to enlightenment.

Norbu was walking in the area of the white line on the road in the same direction as traffic when the vehicle driven by Keith O'Dell, 31, of Palm Coast struck him. Odell had his 5-year-old son in the vehicle, troopers said.
