Cyprus Crisis 1974

Why was Cyprus made independent in 1924, rather than being returned to Turkey? I have read only that Turkey decided not to challenge the British to return it and so it got made independent. There is not much detail about that period online in any place.

You are mixing up dates my brother Cyprus got independence in 1960 but Turkey,Greece,UK are suppose to be guarantors of stability on the island plus the Brits have small territory on the island for a RAF base I say the solution should be partition of the island grant North Cyprus independence Reconized by the International community Turkish Cypriots from my understanding are not fazed by the Mainland Turks or the current Ankara govt as they are more right wing than their Cypriot culture or lifestyle

Thanks, I have mixed it up, the British declared it annexed in 1923 and Turkey did not raise objection. But as you say they had rights as a protector of the community there. I think they shouldn’t have let Britain take it, as they are meddling too much with Israel now.
