Now that US is withdrawing from Afghanistan after 17 years of killing and subjugation, Pakistan has to face all the mess that will be left behind. In the past we have seen how that changed Pakistani society and we ended up having suicide attacks every where in Pakistan by the remains of previous US adventures.

Some people believe that there is sense of fear among the Pakistani people and government concerning the US draw down of operations in neighboring Afghanistan, albeit fear from differing causes. Chief concerns include that a sudden withdrawal will lead to chaotic destabilization, which could spill over the border, or that even with a gradual draw down, image will be that the Taliban is winning- a dangerous notion for Pakistan which has its own Taliban groups. Finally, others fear that in America's absence, India and other "unfriendly countries" will gain more influence in Afghanistan.

While some argue fearing a return of civil war between the Taliban and the government in Kabul, the potential local impact of a destabilized or Talibanized Afghanistan on the majority-Pashtun border regions, such as Balochistan. In addition to the concerns about refugees and alliances between cross-border Taliban groups, the Pashtun nationalism among both of these groups is running high. The feeling among these communities of belonging to a "Greater Afghanistan" rather than Pakistan society can undermine the authority of the government within its own borders.

In a recent statement Army spokesman Major-General Asif Ghafoor told reporters in Rawalpindi, where the military is headquartered, that Pakistan has long called for resolving Afghan conflict through political means and a U.S.-initiated peace process has gained momentum lately.

"This political reconciliation must succeed. ... We wish that the U.S. leaves Afghanistan as friend of the region, not as a failure," Ghafoor said, without elaborating further

However I have two questions from my fellow PDF members, who have been keeping a close eye on Afghanistan-Pakistan relations, and the potential US pull out.

1) What would be the implications for Pakistan?

2) What should be Pakistan's strategy to tackle the situation ?

I wouldn't be surprised if they try to sanction Pakistan after their exit, partial exit as they want a toad hole in afghanistan but vis a vis taliban will have a final say about that and the region will not want their presence either let's be clear.

The pace of change that is happening in the world with the balance of power, Pakistan is no longer associated with the US and that is the detriment of the US. There is no 'leverage' left on Pakistan as per their own words. I don't see Pakistan leaving their alliance with China so forget the US.

One thing we can take away from 17 year juggernaut. Pakistan's importance is never bypassed or reduced. despite all the howling and foaming at the mouth. Just look at the face of zalmay zaleelzad having to approach Pakistan after he played a vital role in detteriating the relations between the two nations.

One of the most crappiest article written by anyone... distortion and fabrication shows the butt-hurt of the author.

Pakistani govt and nation are quite content and happy with departure of occupation forces from Afghanistan and means peace and stability will return to the region which anti-Pakistan elements fear and author is one of those

Who is the idiot who made this cartoon? What has Gen(r) Raheel Shareef to do with it? He retired more than two years ago.

To be honest US has no option because regional countries including India and Afghanistan too are not able to fulfill US agenda.
US could have achieved the agenda if US followed the strategy of Pakistan even after OBL incident but US preferred India's strategy.
Establishment and Govt of Pakistan is really trying to present US as a friendly country toward region but because of US ego and so called many threats which US assume as a threat for US I doubt US will not get this posture as friendly nation.

US need to invest for development work in that region to be a friendly nation instead of wasting billion dollars just for nothing.

Iran will be pressurized just to satisfy Israel and Pakistan will be pressurized to satisfy India. I always wonder what US got yet and the answer is "regional hates".

The best counter strategy for me to join chabahar and gawadar together for regional trade and prosperity and invite not only regional countries but Europeans countries too for businesses opportunities.

Lol it doesn't seem like an article, but some thing the OP either wrote or copied from some forum.

whatever... mate it is totally false & distortion... When Talibans were ruling Afghanistan, there was complete peace along Pak Afghan border... we did not even need to deploy army to guard and there was no bombing.... but this piece of shit author is distorting the facts by 180 degrees and saying totally the opposite because all this mess start after US invasion and occupation and then using drones on Pakistani tribal areas... the first drone strike in Wana in 2005 on Madrassa that killed 80 innocent children and after that all suicide bombings & terrorism started...all thanks to USA + Musharraf. Though I'm happy that Pakistan has fenced border even if the total peace prevails.. we should control who enters and leaves our borders.

I have a couple of questions for you..Before US bombardment post 9/11,

1 - Was Pakistan suffering from Taliban government?
2 - Was the problem of drugs and heroine taken care of by Taliban government?

It is the US which complicated things for us and our society, but joining hands with gangadesh.. US saw money flowing to them and they also needed a partner against China, they couldn't find a better country than gangadehshatgard.

Now that US has failed, gangadehshatgard, which unleashed it's proxies in the name of TTP will obviously have sleepless nights full of sweats..
