Abkhazia and South Ossetia declared independence from Georgia in 1991. They don't speak Georgian and do not feel they belong in Georgia. How they wound up in Georgia in the first place is beyond me. You are right, if Kazakhstan becomes hostile to Russia, northern Kazakhstan goes bye bye because Russians are majority there.
