The nominations for the 18th Lux Style Awards were revealed last weekend and included a snubs of some very prominent celebrities. And needless to say, they were not happy about it.

Mohsin Abbas Haider

Mohsin Abbas Haider, for one, called out the awards team for not nominating his drama Meri Guriya in any of the categories. “First of all thank you for nominating our song Na Ja in the Best Singer of the Year category,” the Na Maloom Afraad actor shared on Instagram. “But I am highly disappointed not to see a single nomination of our drama Meri Gurya. I don’t know the reason (which I would love to know, if any) but this is very disrespectful for the whole team of the play.”

He concluded, “And thanks for making my belief that ‘let’s just make money and run our kitchens’ stronger, thanks.”

Eman Suleman

The model has been nominated in Best Emerging Talent category. However, she has decided to withdraw her name from the list on the basis of the fact that she doesn’t wish to share the accolade with an alleged harasser.

“Not to rain on anyone’s parade but this, just isn’t for me. I’m sorry, even though I shouldn’t have to be. Maybe I’m not. I don’t know. Also, I didn’t even send in my portfolio,” she wrote on Instagram, followed by a short video.

Not to rain on anyone’s parade, but this, just, isn’t for me. I’m sorry, even though I shouldn’t have to be. Maybe I’m not. I don’t know. Also, I didn’t even send in my portfolio. I have a very tough time pronouncing the word eye. What a behuda accent, btw.

“I was extremely honoured to be nominated for the Lux Style Awards but what I’m going to say next is going to result in a lot of eye rolls. I am tired of talking about it, honestly,” Eman says in the video. “I do not wish to be a part of an accolade which is shared with an alleged harasser; I feel no joy. Maybe nominate someone who feels happy about it. I don’t. I am basically done.”

Ahsan Rahim

It wasn’t only Haider who was disappointed to not see his project named in the nominations. The Teefa in Trouble director, Ahsan Rahim has called out the LSA’s for selections for the Playback Music category.

“I rarely comment on such matters but seeing the way my movie’s music has been completely ignored by the LSA has made me more appalled than disappointed,” he shared.

“It goes to show how certain biases of certain individuals can turn the game upside down just because they don’t like you or your film personally. Or you didn’t let them use your music for free for their performances,” he wrote on Twitter. “I won’t be surprised if my film -the biggest non-holiday blockbuster of all times in Pakistan – goes unnoticed at the awards just because the voice of a few in charge is louder than many millions.”

Soft power projection. Lets all be Kanjars and Bhaands

Even though I laugh on many of your posts, I would really like to know what do you mean by "Kanjars" and "Bhaands"?

So Pakistan proudly presenting its great music which is absolutely amazing and promotes our soft image to the world should be labelled as "Soft Power projection by Kanjars and Bhaands"?

And Nusrat Fateh Ali, Noor JahaN, Mehdi Hasan, Rahat Fateh Ali, Pathanay Khan, Abida Parveen, Ustaad Amanat Ali Khan and so on and so on.... where do you put them in one of your mentioned categories?

Sure i do not shy away from questions. i am an open book.

Kanjar

Bhaand

The soft power you need to project is your people who are honest, hardworking and are people who stand for what they believe is right or wrong passionately.

It is an Indian concoction that soft power can only be projected through dance, cuisine and making your country a human zoo.

There is nothing wrong in enjoying some music or local dance or even local fruits gigiddy, but to project it as a generalizing working piece and then proceed to impose this as a life choice on people by constant bombardment of it. Highly counter productive.

You really don't know what a "kanjar" is?

Being born in a lower middle class family and having spent my life in those busy town streets, I surely know few things about our culture.

I agree that Bollywood like Masala should be discouraged BUT I take serious offense if someone would equate our legends who have become our soft face around the world to "Kanjars" or "Bhaands".

Have seen myself how European people have become so much interested in learning Urdu, understanding our culture and denouncing stereotypes after listening to our great singers like Nusrat sahib (or more recently the small girl Hadiya Hasmi) etc.

So if this is not the soft power then I dont know what else is.

Sure man every women in Pakistan aspires to be Mehwish Hayat.

Happy now? I take it back

Well, that's what I was wondering as well that both your flags are set to Pakistan and you are unaware this previous term.

Wow, how do you define a legend.. they were called Kanjars in good ol' days and now we call them legends. Really a question, would you like your brother, sister, daughter, son, spouse to follow in the footsteps of these "legends". For me, a legend is Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, Abdul Sattar Edhi, Jaan Sher Khan, Jahangir Khan, Imran Khan, several martyred soldiers & officers, the list is long and yes I can safely that I wish my sibling, children to follow in their footsteps.

I see a disconnect here..

My beef with the above statement is that you make it sound as if those producing great music, movies or other forms of art, are "Kanjars" and "bhaands".

Good music and Hollywood is the main reason of American soft power around the world and not few good honest and hardworking men who tried to change something. Maybe they are known to a specific group of people but thats about it.

But ask anyone who Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Marlon Brando, Tom Cruise, Angelina Julie, Brad Pit are and almost everyone would tell you "American artists".

I partially agree with you that Bollywood style forms of art should be discouraged.

America enjoys soft power projection through the 'American Dream'. Hollywood or novelty rap comes way down the order. Do you know what the American dream is or was before it all went great again?

I have given you definitions from wiki and not from local peer shop.

Let me put two questions to you:
1) How many Europeans you know who could tell you who Abdul Sattar Edhi or Dr. A. Qadeer Khan is? They are our heroes but the world outside Pakistan does not necessarily see Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan as a soft image of Pakistan (tbh, he is seen rather in a negative light). I am just saying.

Of course sports is also one of the most powerful forms with what you could project the soft image. But then there are also people who would tell you that swimming, playing cricket, football etc is haram and playing those are "kanjars". What then?

2)A provocative question: If an honest, hardworking and highly educated person develops his/her love for learning to play piano and follow the footsteps of Beethoven or Mozart, does that make him a "Kanjar"? So if Dr. Abdul Qadeer, Imran Khan, Jahangir Khan or our great soldiers start learning to sing or play musical instruments, will you call them "Kanjars"?

Team 'Koi Chand Rakh' is especially upset at being snubbed

After Mohsin Abbas Haider expressed his disappointment with the Lux Style Awards not nominating Meri Guriya for Best TV Drama, others have taken to social media to voice their grievances

The team behind drama Koi Chand Rakh are especially unhappy about the snub.

According to composer Shani Arshad, the drama had one of the most popular OSTs of the year but didn't make the list.

Koi Chand Rakh is one of the most popular OST of the year and more popular than the nominated ones, but not added in the #LSA2019. Some research is needed before announcing the biggest awards of the country.

Producer Abdullah Seja spoke up for the drama as well, along with Faysal Qureshi's performance in Haiwaan.

Director Ahsan Rahim is upset that his film Teefa In Trouble has three nominations and none are related to the soundtrack which he says was "the biggest and undisputed super hit album of the year."

There was a lot of good content in 2018 and the jury at the awards had their work cut out for them. While the LSA jurors nominate artists and productions based on the work's quality rather than its popularity, it is only natural for people in the entertainment industry to be upset at the perceived snubs.

But some are more gracious about their defeat:
