NEW DELHI: An attempt to commit suicide will no longer be an offence as the Home Ministry has decided to delete the provision from the statute book. This is despite concerns from some states that they will be handicapped from stopping persons who resort to threatening the government by sitting on fast until death or self immolation to press for their demands.

The Home Ministry said on Tuesday that it has been decided to delete Section 309 (attempt to commit suicide) of the Indian Penal ..

I never understood the reasoning behind the law. The person already hates his life (which is why the extreme decision) and if he fails he gets put into jail :O
Anyway it's good that it's gone. What these people need is help and some understanding to hopefully deal with those issues, not punishment in jail!

Ah okay! hmm........perhaps some provision to allow state intervention in cases where people blackmailing the state through attempted suicide, not sure.

The only reason could be to prevent some one from trying to commit suicide..... Otherwise whats the point in having a law if he succeeded in committing it?????

How otherwise a state can do to stop a suicide???? (

If someone is truly suicidal, a legislation wont stop him, it's a sudden extreme decision. state really cant do much.
As hinted in the OP this law seems like it is more politically aimed, for example stopping hunger strikes/fast onto death type things, which grabs attention and causes problems for the state (perhaps this was used against Sathyagrahis?).
