Sensing a political opportunity in Tamil Nadu following the conviction of AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its efforts to make superstar Rajinikanth join the party.

During a Navarathri visit to Mr. Rajinikanth’s residence last week, Tamilisai Soundararajan, president of the BJP State unit, tossed the idea of the popular actor supporting the party to his wife, Lata Rajinikanth, party sources said.

BJP sources told The Hindu that Ms. Soundararajan went to the actor’s house on an invitation from Ms. Rajinikanth.

The actor was, however, away shooting for his next movie, Linga.

Ms. Soundararajan invited Mr. Rajinikanth to release a book on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently being given the final touches. She told the family that she would visit again to talk about the book when Mr. Rajinikanth returned. They discussed the political situation.

A senior BJP leader said the party felt the situation as ideal for roping in someone like Mr. Rajinikanth, who had mass appeal.

Past support

Recalling Mr. Rajinikanth’s support to the DMK-TMC combine in 1996, the leader said the actor’s backing could be a huge boost to the party’s fortunes in Tamil Nadu.

“Both the AIADMK and the DMK are facing corruption charges. We believe there will be a huge leadership vacuum in the next Assembly election,” the leader said.

Talk of the BJP trying to get Mr. Rajinikanth on board has been doing the rounds for a while.

The actor has a positive opinion about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who met him at his Poes Garden residence during the Lok Sabha election campaign in the State.

Party national president Amit Shah is learnt to have discussed the possibility of inducting the actor.

Nope...Rajini's health is not good (kidney problems I heard), plus his family does not have a good name (Latha's side of the family, plus arrest warrant due to unpaid loans on his daughter/wife), and above all I dont think he is interested in politics himself.
Even if this means just asking Rajini to campaign or voice his support it means nothing, as they literally have no leaders in the region...even for a cm candidate.

Stupid move..seems like BJP is no different from the rest hero worshiping blind thiravida sickular parties..

Tell me what other options do they have? In TN, just like in Mumbai, film stars are worshipped. The actor has a powerful image. More importantly, he has the image of a clean man with conscience and a desire to help the less fortunate. I have heard about his contributions to poor people and the amount of good work he does for the people despite his status.

It's a good time for both congress and BJP to try to make inroads into TN. DMK has just been accused in one of the biggest scams in history, and 'Amma' just became the first sitting CM to find her arse in jail, with one of the biggest fines ever imposed as well.

I heard 'kanavukanni kusboo'too joining BJP this season??..double bonanza for Tamilnadu BJP..

thats all gimmicks....just to sum up his local fans base and to maintain a good clean reputation among public...Fans/Fans clubs are the main backbone for every actors, especially those from the south..
anyway..i do admire for his good contributions and charity works..
btw-i am also a fan of Ranjnikanth..

There was a rumour a few months ago, but she dismissed it, She got caught in the internal dmk power struggle....for now it is better for her to stay out of politics. Maybe things might change closer to the elections ...

Not gonna happen. Rajnikanth is wise enough to not fall in this trap.

DMK has absolute control over media through Sun networks. They'll screw his film career if he dares and make a royal mess of it. Besides TN politics is dominated by rationalism (remember a few weeks ago Stailn had to apologize for wishing everyone Happy Ganesh Chaturthi on Twitter). The BJP snakeoil of Ram/ Sita/ Hindu etc. does not sell there at all.

I was wondering what happened to the BJP paid online hindutva brigade. Guess afer the love Jihad campaign flop they're back in force.
