Coal Discovered in Deep Forest of Laxmichari
Reported by Khagchari Representative

Coal has been discovered in the Burmachari deep forest of Laxmichari located in the Khagchari Hill Tracts Zilla. After receiving a news from a reliable source, the nearby military command and Sub-Zilla administration have jointly visited the place and have reported of the existence of a valuable coal mine there.

They have brought with them the samples from the coal field. After receiving a news, 12 Field Regiment Artillery Laxmichari Zone Commander Lt. Col. Md. Salhuddin Al-Murad and Sub-Zilla Chief Administrator Md. Mizanur Rahman went by car to a distance and then walked to reach the area.

There they found the entire mountain to be full of coal. Even the water flowing through the canals were also carrying pieces of coal. The locals told that many of them use this coal for cooking and to warm themselves during the winter cold. Other people accompanied them also saw this coal. They were Laxmichari Zonal Adjutant Lt. Shams, Burmachari Camp Commander Lt. Akber, Laxmichari Police Offficer-in-charge Md. Shahjahan, Thana AL President Abul Hashem Chowdhury and other honourable persons as well as a few news reporters.

Samples have been sent to Dhaka for its chemical tests. Lt. Col. Salahuddin Murad said that not only coal, other minerals including iron ores may also be found there. Sub-Zilla's Md. Mizanur Rahman said that there is no doubt about a coal field there. He would shortly write to the Mineral Ministry about this field so that people's living conditions can be improved with the use of this coal.

Note that coal has also been found in a place named Iranchari, which is adjacent to Dighinala. Two officials of the Fuel Ministry have already taken samples from this place for a laboratory test.

Good, came in an appropriate time i guess!!....If this is true....the mining should begin asap in order to meet the domestic demand of power....

Cheers!!!

Have you read one news about mining? Suddenly, AL govt has requested India to find oil/gas in Khagrachari Hill tracts. Could it be that the govt is already sure about the existence of this coal mine, the Indian minerelogists come after being requested and discover(?) this already discovered coal mine. Could it be like this? Not unlike Awami League, I guess. I do no more trust AL. It is working for the benefit of India shamelessly.

it will cause enviromental damage it is better for bangladesh to go nuclear and have 1 or 2 stations to provide power.

Well...you know that i stay out of political discussion or comments here in PDF, mainly because it creates more heated arguments...but frankly, i never liked AL's heavy inclination towards India and it pisses me off, when i see my country's benefits are being overlooked for theirs...additionally, i do not mind having such "dohrom mohrom" relation with any other country...but the condition is that the govt. in power should at first look after the country and its people and then do its part-time chamchami...and the recent polls results are showing what AL has done in the past two years...Hasina hasnt been able to maintain our country's respect in the world arena, and being a Bangladeshi that angers me a lot...

Having said that, i think Indian minerelogists were called upon...so that after the mines were discovered...AL can setup a JV with Indian companies, where again...as always...there will be corruption...thus what you said totally makes sense and its possibility is high...IMO, AL could have called upon private companies for the venture and extraction and kept the resources and its due benefit within the country...

Lets see though...whats up ahead...

Cheers!!!

Bangladesh will go nuclear my friend, soon...and that for electricity purpose....am sure regardless of which govt. is in power, they will slowly but surely realise the importance of it...

Cheers!!!

I'm against the project. It'll result in an environmental disaster in the hill tracts. We shouldn destroy whatever thats left of this small country.

With Awami regime in power nothing is safe from indian hand - people, land and our resources.

Our best bet is not to do active exploration in these areas now, rather leave it for later time, when we are safer.

Coal-fired power plants are the major source of environmental pollution. We need atomic plants, there is no doubt about it. But, in case of BD it is taking a long time to get one from Russian or other source. But, demand of power will keep on increasing. Without power, our industrial production will suffer and people's living standard will remain low.

So, I think, we should use our vast reserves of coal in our NW (2,500 million ton) and the newly discovered coal field in our SE. Note that the SE coal filds are above ground and is easy to dig. we can use coal to meet our immediate needs. In the mean time when our country's economy becomes a little stronger we will purchase nuclear power plants that can produce, say, 20,000 MW of power in total.

That is the time when we should stop the use of coal. BD is already producing power near one of its NW coal fields, installed capacity being 350 MW. One or two BD-India jt. venture also speaks of using coal imported from India.

Thanks for the translation.

But oh boy, being a mining engineer this news makes me laugh, no offence to any of you guys but its just that mining 101 is kicking in. Just finding few chunks of coal somewhere does not mean its a coal mine:cheesy:. At this stage it can't be even considered as a probable resource. Lot of surveying, drilling, exploration work is required. Even after surveying if they find a huge deposit of coal it will only be mined out if its economical.

I did some research on Open-Pit Coal mines in Bangladesh for my undergrad thesis. Bangladesh has very little coal reserves. To put things into perspective its coal reserves is about 2-3% of what India has and even less than 1% of what China has.

Unfortunately all the coal mines in Bangladesh are an environmental and social disaster. It would be interesting to see if this "discovery" turns into a full fledged mining operation. It would make a good case study:D owing to its location in the hill tracts of bd.

What Bangladeshi power plants need to do, is get in contract with coal mines in Australia. This will ensure guaranteed supply to the plants as Australia has a lot of untapped coal reserves.
