A joint-venture company of Chinese firms CCECC and CYWEB on Wednesday won expansion works of the Cox’s Bazar airport quoting Tk 1,568.86 crore.

An online meeting of the cabinet committee on national purchases chaired by finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal approved a proposal of the civil aviation and tourism ministry for awarding the contract to the Chinese consortium.

A total of seven bidders participated in the re-tender called by the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh under the civil aviation and tourism ministry on July 29, 2020.

The width of the new runway will be almost double than the present width of 120 feet under the expansion project that aims at facilitating landing and take-off of wide-bodied aircraft.

Additional secretary of the cabinet division Abu Saleh Mostafa Kamal at a briefing said that the committee approved another proposal of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh for price variation of Tk 70.23 crore of the project for developing the Cox’s Bazar airport by Halla Construction of South Korea.

In April 2015, the Korean company was appointed for the works at Tk 578.20 crore, he said.

Abu Saleh said that the committee also approved a proposal of the Directorate General of Food under the food ministry to buy an additional 50,000 tonnes of rice from India.

PK Agro Link, based in West Bengal, will supply the rice at a price of $397.71 a tonne or Tk 33.72 a kilogram.

The committee in its previous meetings held in the current month approved two proposals of the Directorate General of Food for purchasing 1,00,000 tonnes of rice.

Abu Saleh said that the committee did not approve two proposals of the Roads and Highways Department under the road transport and bridges ministry to appoint contractors for a 4-year long performance based operation and consolidation project in Daudkandhi-Chattogram part on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway.

He said that the committee also did not approve a proposal of the power division for repairing of unit-4 and unit -5 of the hydropower plant on the River Karnaphuli.

The committee approved two other power division proposals — purchases of 18, 562 poles from Bangladesh Machine Tools Factory at Tk 28.3 crore under a project of the Rural Electrification Board and appointment of Ideal Electrical Enterprise Ltd at Tk 199.69 crore for establishing eight power sub-stations in Cumilla under a Bangladesh Power Development Board project.

The day’s last and ninth proposal for appointment of a joint-venture company comprising Ramboll Denmark, Aqua Consultant and Associates, Bangladesh and Resource Planning and Management Consultants, Bangladesh as design and supervision consultants at Tk 57.70 crore under a project of the local government division was approved.

Abu Saleh said that an online meeting of the cabinet committee on economic affairs, also chaired by Mustafa, held earlier.

The committee sent back the only proposal of the local government division for purchasing 17 weed harvesters for city corporations in financial year 2020-21 without any tender.

I think its time they start doing some work themselves just hire some consulting firm to work as advisor.

I am surprised. Last time they re-carpeted Dhaka Shahjalal Airport, Abdul Monem did it with quick hardening concrete overnight in two phases. This contract should have gone to them, maybe too far from Dhaka to mobilize?

They still might end up doing subcontracts.

Abdul Monem has their hands full with Padma Bridge approach road works though, that is a way bigger project and far more profitable.

All construction material is now sourced from Bangladesh.

I think they are concerned about corruption and not meeting deadlines.
