China's Defence budget double of India's

Monday, Aug 8, 2011

Reflecting its fast-paced military buildup, China's Defence budget is more than double of the allocation by India for its Armed Forces.

Answering a question in the Lok Sabha, Defence Minister AK Antony said on Monday China spent USD 78.63 billion on its armed forces last year whereas India's defence budget for 2010-11 was USD 33.20 billion.

Asked if India would hike its defence budget in due to increased spending by the neighbouring countries, Antony said, "Budgetary provisions for Services are made on basis of an assessment of their requirement for force modernisation, development of critical combat capabilities and overall national policy."

"Keeping these factors in view, the allocation for defence services has been rising steadily from Rs 1,05,600 crore in 2008-09 to Rs 1,64, 415 crore (USD 37 billion) for 2011-12," he said.

In percentage terms, Pakistan's defence spending has increased by almost double in three years from 2008 to 2010.

In 2008, Pakistan spent USD 3.43 billion which rose to USD 6.40 billion in 2010.

Meanwhile, answering another query, Minister of State for Defence MM Pallam Raju said HAL has bagged an order to export seven ALH Dhruvs to Ecuador in global bidding.

"It is the process of setting up a regional maintenance centre to cover after sales services, technical and logistic support in the entire Latin region," he said.

Even India is spending too much comparing by our economy
India Increases Defense Spending by 11.6 Per Cent to Counter Military Inflation
2011-02-28 India increased annual defence spending by about 11.6 percent on Monday, aiming to overhaul the military to counter the military inflation and strategic threats posed by China's rapidly expanding offensive military capabilities. The increase suggests the government plans to move ahead with some of a slew of planned defence acquisitions, analysts said, including a $10.5 billion fighter jet contract, one of the world's largest on offer.

India, among a host of countries wary of China's economic and military heft, is also eyeing surveillance helicopters, transport aircraft and submarines to beef up defences in the air as well as in the Indian Ocean. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, presenting the 2011-2012 budget to parliament, set the military budget at just over 1.64 trillion rupees ($36.28 billion), up from last year's 1.47 trillion rupees. Last year the increase was about 4 percent.

"China is the real long-term challenge on the strategic horizon and India's security planning is geared toward it," said retired brigadier Gurmeet Kanwal who heads the government-funded Centre for Land Warfare Studies. China, which considers the U.S. military as its main rival, set its defence spending at $78 billion last year. It is expected to announce a defence budget for 2011 later this week ahead of an annual session of parliament. The core U.S. defense budget -- not including war funding -- was $530 billion in 2010.

More than 40 percent of the Indian defence budget for 2011 will be spent on capital expenditure, Mukherjee said, while the rest will go toward maintaining one of the world's largest standing armed forces. "Needless to say, any further requirement for the country's defence would be met," he said seeking to assuage concerns that the rise in spending was short of the military's expectations.
Old rival and neighbour Pakistan, which like India, also has nuclear weapons, is also a factor in India's defence planning.:coffee:

even in % terms China is spending more than us. According to an estimate by some american think tank , they are spending somewhere around $120bn which is 4 times our spending with economy being 3 times larger than us. Hence proportionally more than our budget.

Its not 78 billion rather much more than the projected figure , They don't disclose much China atleast spends US $100 billion in defense , Thats why they are running multiple projects at the same time, Currently they are running second largest number of defence projects if not the first , You can count them they are atleast dozen going around plus the procurement rate of PLAAF,PLAAN and PLA it will help you to have an idea about there defence budget .

Indian defence budget is good one in its own but i think you can't match China in terms of defence budget .

Even Saudia Arabia has more defence budget than india

Even Saudia Arabia has more defence budget than india

thats because saudi is using oil money to buy them, not via tax collections or loans
