China would accept united Korea: US documents

WASHINGTON: China, long viewed as the protector of North Korea, is ready to accept the unification of the peninsula after a collapse of the regime, according to US documents leaked on Monday.

Over an expansive dinner last year, the Chinese ambassador to Kazakhstan revealed that Beijing considers North Korea's nuclear program to be "very troublesome," according to a memo obtained by whistleblower site WikiLeaks.

Ambassador Cheng Guoping "said China hopes for peaceful reunification in the long-term, but he expects the two countries to remain separate in the short-term," said the leaked cable by US Ambassador Richard Hoagland and reprinted by a British newspaper.

In a separate cable, South Korea's then vice foreign minister Chun Yung-Woo said that China "had far less influence on North Korea than most people believed."

"Beijing had 'no will' to use its economic leverage to force a change in Pyongyang's policies and the DPRK leadership knows it," he said, referring to the North's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Chun also said that South Korea believed that North Korea "had already collapsed economically" and would "collapse politically" two to three years after the death of leader Kim Jong-Il.

Kim, who is now embroiled in tensions with the South, is believed to be preparing to hand over power to his son Kim Jong-Un, who is in his 20s.

We never said that. The SK deputy vice minister (some no name low level official) said that. In fact he was complaining that our current ambassador, Wu Dawei is a hardcore Marxist and nationalist who didn't speak English.

So would I!!
Sto this war for Gods sake, neither of you are gonna get anything.
You are both just losing men, money and weapons !!

Talk about people in glass houses.

But the news in the wikileaks is very interesting. China abandons one of it's "brothers" so that their arch enemy can take over and reunify the country. And what does China get in return; promises of significant business with the country that will take over. Very Interesting, I hope all the other "brothers" of China are taking note. Alliances are now made for economic gains and stability, not on the basis of historical ties or to counter common enemies.

Indians are still making noise aren't they?

Of course they still are.....I don't think you had completely read the line you highlighted. Here is my statement again:

North Korea is certainly more friendly towards China and it's rulers than the US or South Korea. But in this case, we might see economics overcoming alliances and political motivations. The same holds true for South Asia or any other region for that matter.

how much more business can we attract from SK or US? Their investments are already running at full capacity. If they were going to invest, they have already invested. If they aren't going to invest, this isn't going to help.

The likelihood for China to accept a unified Korea at present stage is as slim as none.

China would rather accept NK as an agitating neighbor per stat quo than have US army at its door-step. Why? Because Taiwan issue is still not resolved.

Once Taiwan is unified with mainland, the trust between China and US will be tremendously boosted. China may then consider get rid of NK.

In addition to many ropes on US neck, Taiwan is another one.

As long as the US is uncooperative on Taiwan, China will be uncooperative with US.

Don’t think China to NK is one way aid. No! In fact, NK is very rich in minerals. They ship these treasures to China in exchange of foods. I remember I hear S Koreans cry foul that NK sells those treasures in such cheap prices to China instead of SK.

I don't understand why everyone is taking these leaks so seriously. The documents are citing second hand hearsay attributed to a Chinese foreign ministry member. They weren't released as official statements (could how hearsay be official?) and no official statement looks to follow on the heels of the leaked cable.

And really what do they change about the situation if the US already knew what they knew going into the crisis. If this was really the gospel truth (of PB opinion) wouldn't the US have pressed for a resolutions already?

Well with an influx of millions of new South Koreans and land, there is certainly promise in the businesses that would arise in what is currently North Korea. It would be painful in the short term but pretty nice for business in the medium to long term as the area is brought into the 21st century.
