China to release its own ‘Windows XP’

Will this be the end to China’s reliance on Microsoft and Apple? China will be releasing a new homegrown desktop operating system in October, according to cnii.net.

Ni Guangnan, member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said in a press meeting that China is going to release an updated desktop operating system that will eventually be able to be used on smartphones and tablets, as well as supporting mobile Apps.

The new system is seen as an attempt by China to reduce the technology gap between China and other technology advanced countries. It is also expected to break the monopoly of the giants Microsoft and Apple.

Ni said he hoped that the new system would replace Microsoft’s Windows XP, and that it would make the shift to mobile devices in three to five years.

Recently China has banned Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system from use on government computers. And since Microsoft has stopped providing XP updates, this might be the perfect timing to introduce the new home-brewed system.

But it remains to be seen whether the new system will grasp the opportunity. While Ni is optimistic about the new system, most Chinese web users worry that it would be another copy of the previous Chinese operating system.

“I doubt whether it will be a success when the developers are members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. But it might work when developers are from companies like Xiaomi, Tencent, Baidu, or Qihu 360. It might be better if we let those who know the market develop the system. ” @1937-44-1980-10

“I hope that technology in China will advance and that China can use its homegrown system. It is not good for a country to use foreign operating systems. If this new system is released, I will definitely use it.”@xueshanzhulin

Interesting news. Anyone who is able to break the American monopoly in the OS segment deserves a standing ovation. What is the status of the S.Korean Tizen OS?

Is this about Ubuntu Kylin?

Just customize Linux and use it. :drag:
Whatever you do with Linux, it will not be like Windows and Mac OS X has done a great thing in creating an easy to use Unix like operating system. After all these 22 years, Linux has not done something great but it is still mostly known as developer's operating system and not a user's operating system.

can they not do something similar to OS x?

can they not do something similar to OS x?
They can, but they need a will to do that. Some Linux distributions such as Elementary OS, Pear OS are working hard to make it more like OS X. But there is a lot of different between both OSes. Technologies are totally different. Even if you get OS X kernel which is free, you cannot create OS X because Cocoa is not open source like kernel which is the thing which make OS X look like what it is.

However, if I ever want to use Linux, I will use Elementary OS because they are doing great in creating an easy to use Linux based operating system.

These kind of shameful comments are the reason the West has so much power and influence over others. Liberals remain the biggest threat to China internally.

Even if the Chinese operating system isn't as good as Microsoft, patriots should use the Chinese OS to support it.

If the Chinese OS is not the best but still good enough, then use it if you want China to develop technologically.

I cannot understand why Chinese patriots buy expensive foreign brands at the expense of Chinese brands and give the Western companies Chinese money so they can build weapons to destroy China.

Exactly. Although I have access to pirated copies of Office, I prefer to use Kingsoft Office. Same as good, if not better.

Chinese OS expected to debut in October

BEIJING, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- After concerns about U.S. surveillance and a monopoly probe of Microsoft, there is some good news for China's homegrown operating system (OS): a desktop version may be ready in October.

Ni Guangnan of the Chinese Academy of Engineering told the People's Post and Telecommunications News that the OS will be first seen on desktop devices and later expanded to smartphones and other mobile devices.

Ni heads an OS development alliance established in March. There are still problems in the program, including a lack of research funds and too many developers pulling in different directions.

"China has more than a dozen mobile OS developers with no independent intellectual property rights because their research is based on Android," said Ni, adding future development should be led by the government.

According to the report, Ni said the end of Windows XP and the government ban on the procurement of Windows 8 have opened the door to domestic OS developers.

"Our key to success lies in an environment that can help us compete with Google, Apple and Microsoft," said Ni.
