China to release its own ‘Windows XP’
Will this be the end to China’s reliance on Microsoft and Apple? China will be releasing a new homegrown desktop operating system in October, according to cnii.net.
Ni Guangnan, member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said in a press meeting that China is going to release an updated desktop operating system that will eventually be able to be used on smartphones and tablets, as well as supporting mobile Apps.
The new system is seen as an attempt by China to reduce the technology gap between China and other technology advanced countries. It is also expected to break the monopoly of the giants Microsoft and Apple.
Ni said he hoped that the new system would replace Microsoft’s Windows XP, and that it would make the shift to mobile devices in three to five years.
Recently China has banned Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system from use on government computers. And since Microsoft has stopped providing XP updates, this might be the perfect timing to introduce the new home-brewed system.
But it remains to be seen whether the new system will grasp the opportunity. While Ni is optimistic about the new system, most Chinese web users worry that it would be another copy of the previous Chinese operating system.

“I doubt whether it will be a success when the developers are members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. But it might work when developers are from companies like Xiaomi, Tencent, Baidu, or Qihu 360. It might be better if we let those who know the market develop the system. ” @1937-44-1980-10
“Let the officials use the system, and we can use the “poor” windows software.” @guyueqiushan100

“I hope that technology in China will advance and that China can use its homegrown system. It is not good for a country to use foreign operating systems. If this new system is released, I will definitely use it.”@xueshanzhulin
