BEIJING, March 5 (Xinhua) -- China will lower its defense budget growth rate to 7.5 percent in 2019, from last year's 8.1 percent, according to a draft budget report to be submitted to the annual session of the National People's Congress (NPC) opening Tuesday.

The 2019 defense budget will be 1.19 trillion yuan (about 177.61 billion U.S. dollars), figures from the report show.

The rate marks a fourth straight year for the budgeted growth rate to dip into the single digit since 2016, following five consecutive years of double-digit increases.

China's budgeted defense spending growth rate stood at 7.6 percent in 2016, 7 percent in 2017, and 8.1 percent in 2018.

Describing China's defense budget increase as reasonable and appropriate, Zhang Yesui, spokesperson for the annual session of the 13th NPC, said the raise aims to "meet the country's demand in safeguarding national security and military reform with Chinese characteristics."

US defense budget in 2019: $716 Billion
US defense budget in 2020: $750 Billion

EU defense budget 2020: $320-$350 Billion
US+NATO defense budget 2020: $1100 Billion

Any Idea what the Purchasing power parity of buying a Chinese products and services for the PLA is versus buying a similar system for the Us or the EU? For Example, US made SDB II versus the Chinese CS/BBM2. Nearly Identical systems, and possibly similarly effective. The lower price China buys these products allows them to get more for their Yuan.

$177 Billion Chinese defense Budget adjusted for PPP might have the equivalence of $250 Billion; making it close to the comobined budgets of its potential adversaries: $ 42 Billion (Japanese Defense Budget) + $39 Billion (South Korean Defense Budget) + $90 Billion (60% US Navy Budget) + $62 Billion (40% US Air Force Budget) + $ more billions from various US military branches.

China makes more focused products and doesn't try to squeeze so many features into one product. China also focuses on physical products because they are catching up, but is probably shifting more and more of its defense budget to software, better integration and automation. Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, and autonomous systems will make up more of the Chinese budget, because using a Type 052D Destroyer more effectively will at some point be better than building a second one and operating it the same way as today.

The defence spending only account for 1.3% of China's GDP, comparing to 3.5% for the US

Basically China only use a little finger in this arms race, yet China produce the most fighters/warships in tonne and armed vehicles in the world per year.

Just imagine if China were being serious about start an arms race with the poor bankrupting US, and increase the defence spending to GDP ratio the current US level, the US would have to increase their defence spending to the ex-Soviet level, and will crash its economy.

Thats why despite of whatever the US media hype, acutally it is the US dare not to enter an new arms race, since arms race are fun and easy to win by China now.

PLA is corrupted, PLA generals only know sptupid human wave tactic and lost badly wt this "human wave" in 1979 and 2014 conflict against VN .

More money only make PLa more corrupted while stupid PLa gens will still only use stupid "human wave" tactic

And another important thing again.

China never included all their Defence R&D cost to their official budget. Meanwhile other countries, included all R&D cost to their official budget.
That's very huge amount !

For example, Before entered service (September 2017-The second country in the world to officially operate 5th Gen Stealth Fighter) All costs regarding Development project of J-20 Stealth Fighter doesn't included in Defence official budget.

Let US keep bloating their military budget, and become the second soviet union.

Chinese is Smart people, we know exactly when to release the fire and when we need to play a long game :-)

You honestly think China would use human waves in a war???

War changes I highly doubt China would be using obselete tactics when its using modern technology which brings out new tactics and strategies.

New tactic only can be developed from fighting in real battle. But PLA havent fought any real war after her daddy US stop support CN after Soviet collapse.

Btw: current US air force still using same tactic like in VN war. Just using better war planes while PLAAF is still so stupid, nothing change ( PLAAF didnt fight in 1979 war cos they cant survive against VN air defense system )

United States needs billions anyway to pay for all the useless and endless war in distant land.

Just means less money for infrastructure which generate future revenue.

Report to the nearest hospital for brain check up. Your Agent Orange poisoning is flaring up again.

Efficiency.

Starkly different from the legalized corruption infested US military industrial complex.

Smart move by them to be honest instead of bloating themselves like the soviet union did. This will fustrate the usa.

Definitely agree.

China reflects confidence whereas the US appears more and more insecure these days, even fearing BYD monorail in the US can spy on innocent US people.

Plus they have a huge burden in the form of veterans inflicted with lots of kinds of mental and physical diseases.

War has its own costs in the society of the war-mongering country.

7.5% growth in defense spending is not a small number, if putting the massive base in consideration.

China's 2018 defense spending was CNY 1.1 trillion. 7.5% growth means the incremental value alone is CNY 83 billion.

China's Type 052D Destroyer is about CNY 3.5 billion per unit in cost. 83/3.5=24. I.e. even the incremental value alone in one single year could pay the bills for 24 units of Type 052D destroyers.

The incremental value is a large number in actual terms and the Chinese government wants to slow down defense spending in relative terms to focus on other economic projects, as well as buying US products to end the trade war. Its a move that defends china so it could be considered defense spending in a way.

BTW 3.5 Billion yuan is approximately USD $520 million. What do you think the sale price would be to Pakistan, if Pakistan thought it would be needed?
