BEIJING (PTI): China's first Mars probe will be launched from a Russian rocket in November this year, two years later than originally planned.

The Mars explorer, Yinghuo-1, marks the country's first attempt at deep space exploration after sending a probe to the moon, state run People's Daily reported Monday.

The 110-kilogram micro-satellite was originally planned to be launched in October 2009 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan but the launch was postponed.

The orbiter is due to probe the Martian space environment with a special focus on what happened to the water that are supposed to have existed on the planet.

China is aiming to build a space exploration programme on par with those of the United States and Russia.

China currently has a probe -- the Chang'e 2 -- orbiting the moon and carrying out various tests in preparation for the expected 2013 launch of the Chang'e-3, which it hopes will be its first unmanned lunar landing.

When stronger carrier rockets enter service China should be able to launch larger payloads independently. Perhaps we can have a join China-Russia mission using a Chinese rocket in the future.

I heard a lot of times from my Chinese friends here that:

1. China keeps things secret till the very end
2. They make a plan and always meet the set deadline

For me, the above might be true as I don't have any way to negate the statements. But this case is quite opposite to what the general thinking is - The project is declared well in advance and i guess that is fine but it has already delayed by 2 years now. I guess as a compromise they are launching using Russian rocket so that there is no more delays. So none of the statements stand true. That's OK there are delays every where so not a big deal but hope this helps people correct their misconceptions.

Anyways, Good luck for the endeavor!

"Low key" is a Chinese philosophy.

You announce plan as early as possible and make a strong advocacy.
If you are successful, people will think this is normal.
If you fail, people will be very angry.

You do not announce plans, select "Low key".
If you are successful, people will be pleasantly surprised. For example, J-20.
If you fail, people will not very angry. For example, failed rocket launch, 1996.

Anything said about the probe?
I mean will it be like spirit and opportunity or it will be any stationary like phoenix ?
Congrats in advance for this extraordinary achievement.

China has been plan to use Russian rocket from the very beginning, so its not like your specualtion of avioding further delay atall.
The delay in 2009 was due to "Russian technical reason".
Your so-called perception regarding "kept secret until done" may only apply to "military" hardware.
