China sends eye doctors to Pakistan|Sunday Expat|chinadaily.com.cn

An eight-member Chinese medical team led by Song Xudong, chief physician of Tongren Hospital, has reached Islamabad to perform 500 free cataract operations in Pakistan. That's the first part of a medical mission promised by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao during his visit to Pakistan last year.
The visit is being organized by the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, one of the Year of Friendship events marking the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Ambassador Masood Khan said the visit would strengthen the already strong bonds between the people of Pakistan and China.

Thank you, China!

Please send us doctors , engineers, drivers, soldiers, farmers, businessmen, fishermen, electricians, shoemakers, tour guides, sportsman

There should also be an exchange of language tutors. Chinese is a difficult language to grasp for most Pakistanis and perhaps it would be equally hard the other way round.

Chinese should be taught as an option at all levels of schooling so there can be a people to people exchange which would lead to business opportunities between the two friendly nations.

Pakistanis are found in nations all over the world and so are Chinese. But not so much in each others. This should change.

Before these cataract operations are allowed to take place there need to be clear guidelines placed, the benefits and negative consequences of receiving a cataract operation MUST be explained to each any every patient before any work is done on them. People are ignorant and do not understand a the risks of a cataract operation nor the risks afterwards. They also need to be educated about any pre-existing eye conditions that they have people should not walk in and expect their eye sight to return to optimal level. People with glaucoma, amblyopia, macular degeneration, and other common eye conditions will still have these conditions after a cataract operation.

The cataract will simply remove the cloudy crystalline lens. So in some cases some people will benefit from a cataract operation for some it's best not to get it depending on their age and need for work, it may be best not to get it all because a cat op can exacerbate pre-existing conditions if at all.

Though majority of patients do experience better vision post cat op, the cat op has a high success rate very simple and for surg for an experienced Opthamologist to do.

Good initiative, now some people who say that China does not support Pakistan can hopefully keep quiet.

It's a good initiative but don't feel content with just 500 cataract operation...You can say they are helping you only when this 8 doctors stay in your country and teach others to perform the same procedure... Because in India one of largest eye care charity institution "Sankara Nethralaya" perform around 35,000 cataract operation free of charge to poor every year, and China being your best friend can do at-least 5000 cataract operation...
