China says to go ahead with Pacific naval drills
BEIJING | Wed Nov 23, 2011 9:07am EST
(Reuters) - China said Wednesday it will go ahead with naval exercises in the western Pacific this month, an announcement that came a week after Washington reinforced its Asia-Pacific footprint with plans to operate 2,500 U.S. Marines out of northern Australia.

Beijing emphasized its right to go carry out the regular annual drills despite regional fears about its growing military strength, particularly that of its navy.

After a diplomatic push through the region by U.S. President Barack Obama, tensions between the United States and China spilled over into meetings of Asia-Pacific leaders in Indonesia, particularly over how to handle competing regional claims to the South China Sea.

Obama's push, which included plans to operate Marines and U.S. war planes and navy ships out of a de facto base in the Australian city of Darwin, may have fueled China's fear of being encircled or contained by the United States and its allies.

"This is an annual, planned, routine drill. It is not directed at any specific country or target and is in keeping with relevant international laws and practices," said a two-line statement on the Chinese Defense Ministry's website (??????????).

"China's freedom of navigation and other legal rights should not be obstructed," it said, without giving further details about where the drills would occur.

Japan's Kyodo news agency cited the Japanese Defense Ministry Wednesday as saying six Chinese naval ships had crossed into the Pacific between two major Okinawa Prefecture islands in southern Japan since early Tuesday.

The growing reach of China's navy is raising regional concerns that have fed into long-standing territorial disputes in energy-rich waters that could speed up military expansion across Asia.

China has been building new submarines, surface ships and anti-ship ballistic missiles as part of its naval modernization. In August it made a trial launch of its first aircraft carrier, a retro-fitted Soviet vessel.

In the past year, China has had run-ins at sea with Japan, Vietnam and the Philippines. The incidents -- boat crashes and charges of territorial incursions -- have been minor, but the diplomatic reaction has often been heated.

Tense maritime stand-offs have persisted in the disputed South China Sea, where key shipping lanes carry some $5 trillion a year in world trade.

Vietnam, China, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei all have claims in the disputed waters.

On the tails of last week's East Asia Summit in Indonesia, a U.S. official traveling with Obama said he had been encouraged by the constructive tone of discussions with Asian leaders on maritime security and the South China Sea, a topic Beijing had hoped to keep off the agenda.

Obama told Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, who indirectly warned Washington to stay out of the dispute at the summit, that the United States wanted to ensure the sea lanes were kept open and peaceful.

Chinese state media has said that building a strong navy that is commensurate with China's rising status is a necessary step in China's efforts to safeguard its increasingly globalised national interests.

We've achieved world standards in SSK with the Qing-class submarine. We're going to launch world class SSN Type 095 very soon. We are mass producing Type 052C destroyers and Type 054A frigates equivalent to early 90's NATO ships like La Fayette. We should achieve world class standards when Type 052D destroyer is launched next year (mass production possible by 2014-2015).

Right now, our naval power is enough to control within 500 km from coastline, including Diaoyu Island, Paracels and Taiwan. We will need CVBG to control areas further out like Ryukyu Islands and Spratlys. We'll have 3 CVBG by 2015 and probably 2 more by 2020.

China will get tougher on our unfriendly neighbors as we grow in power and expand outwards until we dominate the East China Sea and South China Sea and project power deep into Western Pacific and Indian Ocean.

Yeah, two Type 085 CVs by 2015 and two Type 089 CVNs by 2020.

We are going to catch up with the USN in the next 10-20 years as the US is running out of the money right now.

China catching up america in military capability?.... How about china first catch up with russia? isn't your latest submarines same as russians 70s era's submarines? Why dont you click here? http://www.fas.org/programs/ssp/nukes/images/chinasubsound.jpg and whats with america running out of money? They can't because they have fearful china to lend them money so america won't attack you....

Russia has only few niche advantages like the SSN.

Yeah, the Yasen class SSN is even superior to our Type 095, but Russia is lagging behind in the rest.

Yes, PLAN knows its limitations. That's why we are tough against Japan in Diaoyu Islands and tough against Vietnam in Paracels. Yet we have less cards to play against Philippines in Spratlys because that far out US CVBG still rules the waves. This military balance will shift over the next 10 years, and with it the leadership mantle in Asia will pass to China.

I doubt Yasen will be superior to Type 095. They should be comparable.

Notice how Yuan SSK, Shang SSN and Jin SSBN seem to all belong to the same generation. Qing SSK is the "next generation" for China. It will be followed by Type 095 shortly and later on Type 096, also in the same generation. Judging by Qing SSK, we've reached world class standards with this generation (i.e. Virginia and Yasen).

The Type 095 and Type 096 are indeed quite incredible, both are using the nuclear reactor that can fully generate the electric power.

But it is still quite odd that some big shrimps said that the Type 095 is somewhat inferior to the Yasen class SSN.

BTW, they also claimed that the Type 096 is going to be able to carry 16 SLBMs(JL-3), not 24 like the Ohio class.

This is quite disappointing as our current Type 094B is already 16 tubed.

Maybe China's coastal region is very shallow which is not suitable for the huge SSBNs to hide without getting detected.

If we have occupied Taiwan, then the east coast of Taiwan has very deep Pacific water, which will be suitable for us to hide the huge SSBNs like the Ohio class.

Exactly! Our lack of progress on Taiwan is cramping our power projection. To break through US containment, you have to expand from near to far, island to island. And if Taiwan is left alone there for political reasons, this is going to disadvantage us.

I really don't think the average Taiwan is looking forward to a China-led 21st century. A significant minority is, but they are still in the minority. DPP is now winning

Well, maybe a 2013 military unification is likely possible, since China had no hesitation to militarily take back Taiwan since 1996 and 2007.

Now the US is getting weaker, and they will not fight for Taiwan.

Even Russia attacked Georgia by 2008, and nothing did happen.

You meant China waited for US to become weaks then you full scale of war to take Taiwan back? Have you ever think about NATO will allow China to do war with Taiwan? Do you know Taiwan is a 2nd Silicon Valley in the World besides San Jose California?

Who cares?

Where was Nato back in the 2008 Russo-Georgian War?

USA is already considering trading Taiwan for debt forgiveness. This is a great opportunity to attack. And then all of our other territorial disputes in East China Sea and South China Sea are much easier to deal with.

Even Chinese sisters/brothers blood? As long as China could takes Taiwan back at all cost?
Screw the blood. We gave them enough chances.
