China plans to kill off unproductive majors
10:43 PM, Nov. 28, 2011

China has a problem familiar to many of us -- recent college graduates without a job.

Unlike us, China doesn't think the problem will work its way to a solution.

So, as of last week, colleges in China are on notice to kill off any majors that don't land graduates jobs.

According to the new policy, colleges must begin tracking what jobs their students land after graduation.

If the employment rate for any major's graduates falls below 60 percent two years in a row, the major will be abolished.
Still debating the value of an Indian college degree(Accepted by Western employers) vs Chinese college degree(Killed off by Chinese government)?

ON TOPIC:"I have nothing to say about chinese typical democracy(its their indegenious built democracy system which is very high tech and no one can copy this)"..
Also killing such course would create even more difficulties in society, means how they will get the innovation in their country..
And one chinese quoted that "CHINESE SOCIETY IS INNOVATION DRIVEN.."

We can see who is the real dimwit here. The subject is the college MAJOR, not the educational institutions itself. You do know what a 'major' is at the university level, no?

Wait lmao so how does this reflect badly on China? I bet if the US cancelled say anthropology as an unproductive major you'd scream in joy and bow down to the American master.

If anthropology PROVED to be unproductive, by all means eliminate it. What this mean is that China has finally come to the realization that a college education is supposed to be purposeful, meaning the education should have some measurable impact to the country, to the society, and to larger humanity. The fact that this is happening at all should be both a warning and an occasion for rejoice.

thank you.

Hear that Korean? Not even the most anti-China purebred white American agrees with you.

But I agree with him. And am not white.

No, you have agreed with me, just don't realize it yet.

You have agreed that 1. this is not a negative event and 2. this implies nothing about the quality of the institutions themselves.

Of course it is a negative event. It means that all these years Chinese higher education institutions have been graduating people with far less than ideal an intellectual foundation their institutions implied. These are serious and long term consequences. Even in America, we have been seeing similar problems with our higher education institutions.

No, it means some majors are not competitive in the job market. Now China is moving to elminate these uncompetitive majors.

However, the US has not shown any steps to move towards eliminating unproductive majors.

Maybe its because Chinese college tuitions are low relative to income, compared with US tuition rates, so we need to be careful about what to subsidize and what not to.

Okey dokey...You obviously do not realize how serious it is and how much it work involved to eliminate a major from an institution. For the latter, those who have been teaching that worthless major will resist the elimination of their positions. For both sides, it mean all the years and work for both instructors and students have been rendered worthless. For the employers who hired these people with these questionable degrees and found who they hired were not as productive as believed, they now will have serious doubts about the sources of those worthless majors: The institutions themselves. For the parents who have saved most of their lives to provide for their children...

Need I go on how bad this really is...???

China works on a different system. There are different submajors within a department. For example, a Chemistry department might offer 3 majors: Biochemistry, Chemistry, and Chemical Physics, with core classes taught by the same faculty. A Mechanical Engineering department usually teaches both Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering. An Electrical Engineering department might teach both Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering. A Physics department might have 2 degrees, Applied Physics and Physics.

This isn't unknown even at US universities.

However, if Biochemistry, for example, was having bad employment rates, they'd just cut the Biochemistry program. No need to fire anyone, since the Chemistry department is still there.
