JINAN, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- The city of Qufu, hometown of ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius, held a grand ceremony to commemorate the 2,570th anniversary of his birth Saturday.

An educator and philosopher, Confucius (551-479 B.C.) founded a school of thought, deeply influential on later generations, known as Confucianism. He was also the first to set up private schools in China that enrolled students from different social classes.

The ceremony started at 9 a.m. when hundreds of students and residents recited classic quotes from "The Analects," a record of Confucius' ideas and sayings, in front of the Confucius Temple in Qufu, eastern China's Shandong Province.

Wearing yellow ribbons, participants including UNESCO officials, scholars and descendants of Confucius from countries and regions such as China and the Republic of Korea marched to the temple.

Dancers wearing costumes from the Han Dynasty (202 B.C.-220 A.D.) staged a ritual dance at around 9:30 a.m. Representatives presented flower baskets in front of a statue of Confucius, and each participant bowed three times toward the statue.

Similar ceremonies were held in over 30 Confucian temples in China and abroad on the same day.

Annual commemorations of Confucius started in 478 B.C., the year after his death.

The Imperial Japanese Edict drew much from confucious principles.

But Chinese choose communism instead.

You don't know what China adopted, China may have a little bit of everything in her system, but roots the foundation is always Confucianism, that's why East Asians have the same ideological and cultural roots, that's plain to see by non East Asians when they visit East Asian countries and societies, but we also have noticeable differences.

Other than S Korea didn't the rest of the nations on the Map burn down Confucian temples saying that they kept their cultures backward ? Taiwan is a special case because Japan ruled it until 1945. Also other than ROC and S Korea Confucianism no longer play a major part in their cultures.

In all Theravada traditions, the calendar's epochal year 0 date was the day in which the Buddha attained parinibbāna.

Thailand mainly uses the Buddhist calendar which is 543 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar. The year 2019 CE is indicated as 2562 BE in Thailand.

Therefore, if the Sinosphere nations want to adopt the birth of Confucius as the starting date of its calendar, instead of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, that is so foreign and totally irrelevant in East Asia to say the least, this year 2'570 will lead by 8 years the Buddhist calendar's year 2'562!

Alternately, the year 4717 could be used with the chronology starting from the date Emperor Huangdi started his reign in 2637 BC. (The Chinese calendar is used in Cambodia, Mongolia, Vietnam, and other Asian countries.)

many say that Confucius did not believe in God. I believe he did but NOT in the sense that of God as a "being" but rather, something far FAR beyond the concept of "beings". He did believe in a superior, rather, ULTIMATE force or a consciousness called Tao...a conscious force that flows through every being out there, even rocks. In a way, it reminds me of what The Quran says about Allah...we can't even begin to imagine what He is. Islam believes that there were over 120,000 prophets & messengers sent to humanity all over ever since existence...I wonder if Confucius was a prophet from Tao just as Moses was a prophet from Jehovah, Jesus was a prophet from Yaveh and our prophet Muhammed pbuh was a prophet from Allah. I wonder if these are different names of the same force.
Tao = Jehovah = Yaveh = Allah...

teachings of Confucius are not very far off from Islamic teachings from what little I have studied of him.

Well at least China have given the world all these philosophers. Lao Tzu, Sun Tzu, Confucious that are household names worldwide.
Even Mao still give inspiration to many down and trodden people around the world, in Latin America, India, Nepal, Philippines etc.

But I do not know of any Japanese one.
