China-Japan Friendship Association was established on October 4th, 1963 at the former Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai’s initiative. In order to adapt to the development and demand of people-to-people exchange between China and Japan, it is initiated and formed by 19 national people’s organizations including All-China Federation of Trade Unions, All-China Youth Federation, All-China Women’s Federation, The Chinese People’s Committee for World Peace, Afro-Asian Solidarity Committee, The Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, China Federation of Literary And Art Circles, Chinese Writers Association, All-China Journalists’ Association, China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, All-China Sports Federation, Red Cross Society of China, The Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs, China Institution of Political And Legal Affairs, China Association for Science And Technology, All-China Students Federation, The Buddhist Association of China. Guo Moruo was the first honorary president; Liao Chengzhi was the president. Then, Wang Zhen served as the honorary president; Xia Yan, Sun Pinghua, Songjian served as the president successively. The present president is Tang jiaxuan; the honorary president is Song Jian.
The aims of China-Japan Friendship Association are enhancing friendship between the Chinese and Japanese people, promoting the communication of two countries in fields of economy, politics, culture, sports, science and technology, developing the good relations of neighborhood of two countries, fulfilling the wish of the peoples living in friendship from generation to generation, safeguarding Asian and world peace.
After its establishment, with the support from the Chinese government, all sectors of society and the Japanese friends, China-Japan Friendship Association has set up contacts and has made wide range of exchanges with the Japanese political parties, organizations, local authorities and personages from all circles. These activities made positive contributions for realizing the normalization of China-Japan diplomatic ties, concluding the Sino-Japan Treaty on Peace and Friendship, carrying out the exchange of personnel and promoting the long-term, steady development of relations between two countries.
