India-China

China has invited India to participate in the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) — Beijing’s brainchild to steer development along the ancient “silk route” free from the influence of western-backed lenders such as the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Diplomatic sources, who did not wish to be named, told The Hindu that China had sought India’s participation during the visit to New Delhi by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi soon after the Modi government assumed office. “It is clear that the Chinese will not tie the lending from the investment bank to non-economic issues, such as human rights, which western-backed lenders have often leveraged as instruments of political influence and control,” the sources observed.

India is yet to make up its mind on Beijing’s offer, though partnership in the bank could, eventually, facilitate New Delhi’s access to infrastructural funding. Sources pointed out that there are major geopolitical implications in China’s offer as there is little doubt that Beijing now views India as a potential partner in an interlocking politico-economic network of neighbouring countries.

India’s entry into SCO
“If India opens its doors to Chinese investments, especially in the field of infrastructure, after taking care of the sensitivities in the security arena, New Delhi’s entry into the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) could become the prize,” the sources said. India, along with Pakistan and Iran, has observer status in the SCO, a China and Russia-led grouping, whose role would be central in defining the balance of economic and political power in Eurasia.

Analysts pointed out that following the events in Libya, Syria and Ukraine, China and Russia have reinforced their geopolitical connections, evident in the signing of a $400-billion gas pipeline deal. But New Delhi, too, could be part of this expanding arrangement, for visiting Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitri Rogozin said in New Delhi earlier this month that the extension of this pipeline to India would be “one of the largest infrastructure projects that could be conceived”.

The Financial Times is reporting that 22 countries, including some of the wealthy monarchies of West Asia, have so far shown an interest in China’s bold push to establish the AIIB, with a registered capital of $100 billion. The fund is sizeable enough to compete with the ADB, which runs on a capital of $165 billion and is dominated by Japan and the United States.

An ADB study has projected that Asia would require an annual funding of $800 billion till 2020 for developing infrastructure, offering China enough financial leg room to exercise its soft power in its neighbourhood.

They are really confusing. Yi offers a hand of friendship but PLA intrudes into Uttarakhand and Ladakh. We defend then They offer another hand of friendship.

PLA and CCP need to make up their mind who rules China.

They're trying to keep us on the edge. Not sure if it is a good tactic by them, it'll keep us on the backfoot but also doesn't lend itself well to establishing trust in relations.

It shouldn't matter. In fact, this testiness should actually keep the Army and IAF on red alert all the time, speed up infrastructure projects and enhance military build up in the border regions faster. Our fundamental problem is not that we don't have resources, but that there are no men stationed in the forward bordering areas in Ladakh and China border areas of Himachal and Uttarakhand. This makes it easy for PLA to come in whenver it wants.

Pangong lake is another area where we need more rapid assault gunboats.

who will dominate the AIIB Bank....???and how will profit be distributed to all stakeholders.?? but its a smart thinking of chinese when Asia needs huge amount of investment in coming decades...india alone planning to have investment of 1 trillion $ in infrastructure and if AIIB establishes successfully.it would be great for all emerging economies of Asia...China has great forex reserve, good economy, large workforce and very good experience in infrastructure projects... so its a win win situation for china where it can channel her money through AIIB with less interest as compare to world bank.

the broader of the shareholders of AIIB...it would be good for all. i see its a first step from china to invest in Asia later on they will surely cover Africa and latin american countries also.

i told u economic interest prevail over anything, border issue is nothing but to increase defense budget on both side:coffee:

will chinese capital come with a clause ? if not go for it, if it does forget it ... we have access to capital anyways

How much is the interest rate if a country take loan from AIIB ?

How much cheaper it is compare to other international banks?

They are playing "Good Cop, Bad Cop" tactic, to get the maximum out of India.

Dont be naive. China is thinking long term. Getting India's on its side temporarily, will allow it to gain considerable leverage in other developeing countries. The deeloping world looks at what India is doing and mimics it to a large degree. For example, when India decides to buy specific weapon platforms, the developing world usually follows suit. The question you all should be asking is who really hold true power in China? It's obvious it isn't the gov't.

This bank and SCO are led by China, and it will do wonder for them, not us. Even though we may think it will aid our infrastructure, what are the cons?

Let more info come out. Everyone in the world is willing to park and invest money in India at the moment due to Modi's electoral win. China is trying to disengage investments from the West and put it elsewhere where they gain more leverage than loose.

IN the future, if a weak Congress gov't is elected.....who is to say they wont just give up our lands in return for these soft loans? Think its impossible? Yea right, we are talking about Rahul and Sonia who are not even in the country as we speak.

At this rate, they won't get anything.
They think by Bullying and saying soothing words,India might settle to their border demands. What they are doing right now is testing the waters of New Government and their response.I too think that there is a bit disconnect between Some Army Generals in PLA and CCP.
