Currently there are, confirmed by serial numbers, at least 18 aircraft with Russian engines distributed among Dingxin, Cangzhou, and Wuhu (relocated temporarily to Quzhou). However, we know for a fact that there are a lot more than this since they mustered 18 aircraft for the July 1st parade (15 formation flyers with three backups).

It is highly unlikely that China sent all of its J-20s away for the parade. My guess is that half of each division was picked for the parade.

As for WS-10 equipped J-20s, we've seen one in Cangzhou earlier this year. There are most likely more aircraft stationed as well.

There are two WS-10 J-20s spotted doing a flyover in North Eastern China (subject of the news report) this week. They are confirmed to be from the 1st Air Brigade in Anshan. Considering that the Wanghai Brigade in Wuhu has at least 10 aircraft as confirmed by satellite image. It is safe to assume that there are 10 in Anshan as well.

No one knows for sure exactly how many PLAAF plans on inducting but based on estimates from the CAC facility, at least 24 more will be inducted this year. I think China is aiming for around 200-300 of these birds. The real question is will they mass produce the WS-10 variant or wait for the target engine.

Right. China is not afraid of the F-16 and has no reason to deploy the J-20 too close to Taiwan, let Taiwan collect information on the J-20's RCS, and then pass the data on to the US. J-11 is more than enough to deter Taiwan. Of course, headlines like this deceive many readers and create pointless arguments.

China uses a different designation system. 4th generation fighters like the F-15 and Su-27 are considered 3rd gen in China and 5th gen considered 4th gen. This is because China merged the 2nd and 3rd generations into a single generation. Both F-4 and MIG-21s are considered 2nd gen in China but are third and 2nd gen, respectively, under US designation.

WS-10 was supposed to have 136 KN of thrust per initial design but the batch they used on the J-11B had to dial it back to 126 KN. However, in 2016 a news article indicates that newer variants (WS-10B?) resolved the problem and increased maximum thrust by 14% (I could’ve be wrong about the specific percentage) so it is back in the 130KN to 140KN range. This is consistent with rumors that WS-10B is between F-110 GE-129 and GE-132 in terms of power.

An article claims that engine lifespan is 1500 hours, which is a fraction of Western engines but superior to baseline AL-31 China imported in the late 90s.
