The Chinese government has denied claims that it uses foreign prisoners as forced labour to make Christmas cards which are sold in Tesco stores across the UK.
It comes after a British girl found a plea from a prisoner in a Christmas card from a £1.50 pack sold by Tesco. Florence Widdicombe, 6, said her kitten-themed cards contained an alarming message that begged her to notify human rights organisations.
The message read: ‘We are foreign prisoners in Shanghai Qinqpu prison China. ‘Forced to work against our will. Please help us and notify human rights organisation.’ The message also asked the finder to contact a journalist known as Peter Humphrey, who spent two years in jail in China at the same Qingpu prison while working as a corporate fraud investigator in Shanghai, according to The Sunday Times.
