China dams, river diversion will hit Bangladesh harder

Chinese will give jack to concerns of other countries. Rightly so. Its India who is fighting for its rights, even for lower riparian states.

I have to correct you and it may not sound great.

Indian Govt. never gave a rat's behind about the concerns of the only lower riparian state which is Bangladesh.

It has withdrawn water in India during lean season and completely opened all sluice gates during the flood season. This has continued for the last forty years in spite of Bangladesh' friendly overtures.

There are too many well published treatises with tons of factual data published on this matter for it to be deemed otherwise.

It is the primary thorn on the side of India-Bangladesh relations currently.

Maybe you should google the subject a bit more before you comment.....

For the other claim - China withdrawing water in Tibet affects primarily India.

That water will get withdrawn in Indian barrages upstream of Bangladesh way before it ever gets to Bangladesh.

I don't think it matters to Bangladesh whether China withdraws water in Tibet or not.

Lol. First make use of waters in ur country. Bangladesh has the world's largest freshwater. If BD govt is incapable of using it then its not our concern. We need Farakka to float Kolkata port. You are not going to get Teesta. As long as Mamata is at helm, she aint giving it. Even when we divert Ganges, it hardly dries up in Bangladesh. Padma has numerous tributaries which supply water.

And as somebody told before, let China build dams. If BD dont protest then India will.

Let China build dams and Bangladesh suffer.
No, let China build dams and let BD reap its benefits of low amount of water during monsoon that now causes flood. Flood causes destruction of our agriculture and we buy Indian food as a result. Oh God!! We will be finally free of this curse of importing food from India. BD-China Bhai Bhai!! BD-India Bye Bye!!

Let's have a tripartite commission from Bangladesh, China, and India for the management of all the rivers in the Ganges-Brahmaputra delta.

You lot are in no position to demand anything. Eventually we will divert the Brahmaputra like we are all our other rivers.

Divert to where? How do you re-route it to Farakka in the SW when even the corridor north of BD does not make it possible for India to build a 12m wide workable road/highway? So, keep on dreaming.

Looks like the chinese have already created their own string of pearls who do not like them, bangladesh, phillipines, south korea, thailand, vietnam, taiwan, japan.

Good luck getting China into any meaningful negotiation

Certainly, it will be a cause of concern for us if India diverts any more water from the common rivers including Brahmaputra. China needs water to its middle zone to develop agriculture. But, in any case it will not be able to take all the water in the north of the Himalaya.

Why is it fine for China to divert ? Not for India to divert.

It is because China will stock monsoon rainwater and melted water at the north of the Himalaya and divert this excess water to the Tibetan north without any adverse effect on BD. About Indian ploy of diverting, do I have to spell out? However, I believe that the three countries should sit together to find out the correct approach.

Water is water whether it comes from India or China. If it is okay for China to divert water it is okay for India to divert.

Did not I say in my previous post that China will divert only that water in the north of Himalaya that can be stocked during the monsoon and by the Himalayan melted water.

BD has been proposing to India similar things to mitigate the adverse effect of Farakka. Build reservoir in Nepal and the upper region, collect water during monsoon and let it flow during lean season. It will offset the shrtage BD faces due to Farakka. Important point is to build reservoirs at the upstream. It mitigates flooding and supplies more water during dry season.

No politics over water ,please. It is a humanitarian issue concerning poor people living hand to mouth who don't have any idea of these national animosities, political equations, geopolitical rivalries and are just trying to survive with their families.Of course we defend our own countries and are proud of them, but this should not be made a deliberate weapon of politics.

Why should we build a reservoirs in Nepal for the benefit of Bangladesh ? Nepal would not allow that.
If you want reservoirs for your benefit you need to build it on your land.
