In China we have an old saying. Water too clean and no fish can survive. Likewise, air too clean and no human can survive. You western people also have an old saying. What does not kill you makes you stronger. So a bit of pollution is desirable.

The video mentions "coal burning has been the main cause of air pollution as winter heating started".

Now we know in the North it was common for people to use those little iron stoves for home heating just like people used to do in the US (up until about 100 years ago).

However are people in these modern high-rises using coal in their units...I doubt it. Are there massive coal furnaces in these buildings basements? Who is burning this coal?

Most of them still do. That's why China is importing natural gas from Russia starting next year when the pipeline is done.

Not that I know of.

I think it is people in buildings built before say 1998 who are living just beyond a city's modernization.
