China concerned about Libya uprising, attacks on Chinese nationals

Beijing - China said Tuesday it was concerned about the unstable political situation in Libya and vowed to protect its citizens and business interests in the country.

'China hopes the country can restore social stability and political order as soon as possible,' Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said, according to a Xinhua News Agency report.

Ma said Chinese nationals and businesses in Libya have been attacked since unrest in the country erupted on February 16.

Armed men Sunday entered a construction site in the north-east Libyan city of Ajdabiya and stole goods, forcing 1,000 workers employed by China Huafeng Company to flee, according to Chinese media reports.

'The Chinese government attaches great importance to the situation and has instructed the Chinese embassy in Libya to take every necessary measure to ensure the safety of the Chinese nationals and organizations in Libya,' Ma said.

The Chinese government has lodged 'emergency representations' with Libya and demanded an immediate investigation into the attacks and the punishment of the perpetrators, Ma added.

China's presence in Libya is growing, and some 30,000 of its citizens live there, according to Chinese news reports.

Chinese workers flee after Libya raid: company

BEIJING, Feb 22, 2011 (AFP) - More than 1,000 Chinese construction workers in Libya were forced to flee after gun-wielding robbers stormed their compound, stealing computers and luggage, the company and state media said Tuesday.

Beijing has warned its citizens not to visit the North African country and urged Chinese companies to take precautions as protesters overran several Libyan cities, threatening leader Moamer Kadhafi's 41-year grip on power.

The looters raided Huafeng Company's compound in the eastern city of Ajdabiyah on Sunday night, the Beijing News said, citing the Chinese embassy in Tripoli and a friend of one of the employees.

No one was injured in the attack, the report said.

The workers, clutching their passports, plane tickets, food and water, are walking to Tripoli, "several hundred kilometres" away, where they hope to catch a plane to China, the report said.

A company spokeswoman confirmed the workers were walking to Tripoli but said the distance was "not that long". She did not provide further details.

Huafeng, which is based in the eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang, is involved in residential construction projects in Libya.

China concerned about Libya, slow to rebuke Gaddafi

By Sui-Lee Wee and Sabrina Mao

BEIJING Feb 22 (Reuters) - China on Tuesday expressed concern about unrest in Libya but held back from joining other nations in condemning Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi for the bloody unrest in the oil-exporting nation.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu's comments were the first from Beijing on the crisis in Libya, but he omitted mentioning Gaddafi in his remarks, reflecting China's traditional reluctance to criticise authoritarian governments in the developing world.

"China is extremely concerned about the developments in Libya and hopes Libya will quickly restore social stability and normality," Ma said.

"At the same time we are working hard to protect the safety of our Chinese personnel and the safety of Chinese businesses and assets."

Gaddafi's government is waging a bloody battle to hang on to power as the revolt against his 41-year rule reached the capital, prompting widespread condemnation from foreign governments including the United States and Britain. .

But Beijing's reaction to the upheaval in the Middle East has been more cautious than other countries.

China's Communist Party government is wary of any foreign upheavals that could reflect badly on its own authoritarian controls and it has long been suspicious of what it sees as Western-led efforts to topple governments in other countries.
