Dropping the 9 dash line claim all together might be too drastic. And even if the PRC did, so much distrust and military posturing momentum response from the surrounding countries has been built up that it'll take about 5 or more years until surrounding countries may actually start to think that the PRC has seriously scaled back its claims in the South China Sea. And then finally the surrounding countries would start to slow down and halt their own responses. Honestly I think some of the Spratly held features by the PRC just might be fine since it is an important water way for the PRC as well. Mischief Reef is no good though. Its massive and inside the EEZ pf the Philippines. That one would have to go. But the other two big ones (Subi Reef and Fiery Cross Reef) are fine for the PRC to keep along with the 3 or 4 other smaller PRC held reefs in the Spratly island group so long as it's not part of a whole 9 dash line area claim but instead just individually owned features that don't emit an EEZ of their own.
