China Auto Sales Growth Lags U.S. For First Time in 14 Years

Beijing has 5 million cars already, leaders in the central government dont want to kill the country's capital with traffic, otherwise they will be foever stuck in Zhongnanhai and couldnt be able to go anywhere in Beijing.

But it says the tax cut is to tackle the slowdown in sales. So it all seems counterproductive? I mean if they wanted to improve the growth rate why not just direct the city governments to allow people to buy cars.

China is not Singapore, you cannot apply one policy blindly to every city. The central government can only provide incentives and policies, it cannot tell city government how to run their own cities. 60% of household in Beijing own cars, it is too much. On the otherhand, car ownership from rural side my need to catch up.

Then should China use this time to further upgrade and expand its road-bridge infrastructure for future traffic?

China spent billions bilions dollars on roads and infrastures,in many factors roads in China are already the best in the world.but nothing in this world can keep up with China's car increase.

I bet there are plenty of open spaces in the western half of China. ^^

By the end of June, 2011, China has 76.02 million private vehicles, will 11 cities with over one million. Beijing leads with 5.64 million, 60 cars per 100 household.

Road-Building Rage To Leave U.S. In Dust

Associated Press

China’s road-building has surpassed even its own ambitious plans. The Ministry of Transport said Tuesday that construction of twelve national highways has been completed 13 years ahead of schedule. Another eight highways in western China are almost complete, as well, it said.

The massive buildup of China’s highways will soon leave the U.S., the originator of the national highway system, in the dust.

Expressways in China now total 74,000 kilometers, or 46,000 miles, the ministry says–just a thousand miles short of the U.S. interstate system, according to U.S. government data. China has said that by 2020, China hopes to have about 85,000 kilometers of national expressways–a target that it will likely reach before the date, since it has already built 90% of the total.
More In Infrastructure

Spending on transportation infrastructure has helped power the Chinese economy’s growth, especially as roads develop local economies and minimize time and effort for trade.

And the government is putting money where its mouth is. In the past five years, the Transport Ministry spent 4.7 trillion yuan ($713 billion) on road and water transportation–more than double the sum of the annual expenditures listed in U.S. Department of Transportation’s budget reports for the same time period.

The speed of China’s buildup is also impressive, especially in recent years. It has built the majority of its expressways in the past decade and built 33,000 kilometers in the past five years. The U.S. Interstate system, in contrast, was built over more than three decades, starting from 1958 and lasting until 1991.

It’s not all good news, of course. China is already the largest auto market in the world and more highways will encourage more cars. And not all the places that need new roads have been getting them quickly enough: Congestion in major cities is a growing problem–especially in Beijing, which experienced an epic jam in August that at times stretched 100 kilometers. The Beijing city government has said it will limit new license plates to 240,000 this year in a city that hosts about 4.7 million vehicles.

High highway tolls, and a recent rise in prices, are also angering the public and limiting usage. “These are problems that deserve attention,” acknowledged Weng Mengyong, vice minister of transport, who said that the ministry has canceled tolls on close to 90,000 kilometers of highway. But he also offered a friendly reminder: “If there were no tolls, there would be no development of the transport system in China.”

but still, even we have the miraculous world first class roads and highways, nothing can keep up with the increase of cars in China, this year China will overtake US as the biggest oil importer in the world.considering the pollution and massive oil comsuption,China should put strict limits on private cars.Beijing's fast , convenient and cheap fare subway system and expansion is a good model for other cities.

What about pure electric vehicles? No oil needed for those.

Beijing is the biggest car market in China, one tenth of the nation's private car sale market.
a primitive person wont know anything about modern society, he has no idea Chinese policies efficiency, his mental is caged by their indian efficiency, and failed to know that primitive country is run by primitive people.

just based one growth slow down he is either trying to implicating that the China's 'fake' growth or CPC is 'restricting' buying cars BS, when a person starts pooping out so many wastes, it is clear the amount of inferior complexity he is showing.

regulation restriction method used in any well established and developed countries to help society from going to wrong direction, and this modern concept of course is not known by some primitive people where their high caste owners can do whatever they want to fill their greedy pocket and 0 worry of getting caught by justice.

I have been living in the U.K for long time, and spent a lot time in Paris, roma, Milano and other major european cities, however I have never seen what 'Mad Trafic' was like until I came back to China, more importantly, the roads in China are much wider and well planned (unlike in India they call those random muddy pass as road`and its like the bumper cars theme park)..this one of the reasons that I am still not buyig car, as we already have 2 and got nowhere to park and almost 24 hourse peak time, bare in mind my city is just a third class chinese city.

So any sane government will do anything to curb this mad situation, thats why they start investing loads money to further develop public transport with innovation and determination like this Ginormouse bus

but not like this

How the registration of vehicles work in China. If there is restriction on car ownership in Beijing, can one go to rural areas to buy the car and then transfer to Beijing.

no ,you can't.
can i drive in Beijing with other cities driven plate? coz i can do in Shanghai and any other Chinese cities.. if you can drive a non beijing plate in the city then it is very easy to buy a car from other cities and drive in beijing

China is too populous for everybody to drive all the time. One small car (~1500 cc) per family together with a very robust metro and public transit system would be okay. Tokyo can be a good example.
