April 20, 2011

Taking a step forward in the modernization of its police force, Chandigarh will acquire the Golden Hawk, an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), to keep an eye on the city.

Officials of the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) in Bangalore Wednesday gave a live demonstration of the UAV before senior officials of Chandigarh police.

“The UAV will be very helpful in maintaining law and order during VIP visits, rallies, demonstrations and in case of any disaster or calamity,” P.K. Srivastava, inspector general of Chandigarh police, told reporters.

The Golden Hawk can fly up to the height of 100 metres and can do continuous recording for 30 minutes, he added.

“After seeing the recording, police can plan their strategy accordingly. We are satisfied with the trial,” he added.

“The Golden Hawk will run on battery and can fly at a stretch for 30 minutes. Night vision cameras are also installed on it. Special training will be provided to Chandigarh police officials to operate the device,” said another official.

[edit]Potential operators
Australia had considered the purchase of a number of Global Hawk aircraft for maritime and land surveillance. The Global Hawk was to be assessed against the MQ-9 Mariner in trials in 2007.[40] If selected the Global Hawk aircraft would have operated in conjunction with manned P-8A Poseidon aircraft by 10 and 11 Squadrons of the RAAF. This combination, or a similar one, would replace existing AP-3C Orion aircraft in 2018. With the current economic situation, and the delivery schedule pushed back to 2015; the Australian government had decided to cancel the order.[41]
Canada is also a potential customer, looking at the Global Hawk for maritime and land surveillance as either a replacement for its fleet of CP-140 Aurora patrol aircraft or to supplement manned patrols of remote Arctic and maritime environments. Spain has a similar requirement, and has existing contacts with Northrop Grumman.[42]
Japan has been reported as being interested in the purchase of three aircraft.[43] However it might find it difficult to pay for them.[44]
South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) had expressed interest in acquiring at least four RQ-4B and support equipment by 2011 to increase the intelligence capabilities of the South Korean military after the return of the Wartime Operational Control from the U.S. to ROK, and has allocated approximately USD$19m for evaluation purposes.[citation needed] There is ongoing debate among government officials on whether to take the US offer of Global Hawks or to press on with their domestic UAV development program.[citation needed] South Korea expects to sign a preliminary contract for the aircraft by the end of 2011.[45]
New Zealand's Defence Force is keeping a "watching brief" over Global Hawk, which has the range to conduct surveillance in the Southern Ocean around Antarctica, and in the Pacific Islands.[citation needed] At the moment the acquisition process has moved no further than an expression of interest. Also being looked at are the IAI Heron and a natively-developed hand-thrown drone, the "Kahu".[citation needed]
The Indian Navy has expressed interest in MQ-4C Maritime Surveillance Unmanned Aircraft Systems.

Note IN is getting P-8i so the Global Hawk would work perfectly in conjunction with these planes like was planned with Australia, the idea gets better and better! Fingers crossed!

Hey its not his fault....have you even googled the picture for golden hawk ??/ The picture that SpArk posted is among the first....if somebody post a picture with wrong name on the web, its not our fault...but yeah it creates confusion...

@ Abingdonboy
Yeah its true, this news came to the light during Aero India 2011, but i think it was just RFI.....there were reports in US newspapers that India even showed interest in NG's X47B but that doesnot mean that US will sell it to India....but far as Global Hawk is concerned, its meant for sale to other friendly countries, so if India request for it we will definitely get it, but i think we should go for european solution like talarion or mantis because global hawk carries alot of restriction with it.... + We can also get armed version of these european drones but not in case of global hawk and BAE or EADS can help us with our Rustom and AURA also...
