Unidentified gunmen kidnapped the ICRC official in the restive city of Quetta, the main town of the insurgency-hit Baluchistan province in Pakistan, which borders both Iran and Afghanistan.
The man, reportedly a doctor, was travelling to the Red Cross office when he was stopped by gunmen who forced him into their vehicle and drove away, police sources said.
"Khalil Ahmad Dale was standing in front of his office when unknown gunmen riding a Landcruiser picked him and took him away," Nazeer Kurd, a senior police official in Quetta said.
"He has a British passport."
"We are checking all routes out of the districts, but we have not been able to trace that vehicle. We are trying to ensure that the vehicle does not leave Quetta," Quetta police chief Faisal Mehmood said.
No one has immediately claimed responsibility, but criminal gangs have often targeted foreign aid workers in the hope of securing large ransoms for their release, sometimes passing their hostages on to Taliban and al-Qaeda-linked groups.
