A witness described seeing hearing a "loud bang”, with a Stansted Airport spokesman confirming a plane was forced to abort its takeoff.

It is believed the plane had an engine malfunction on the runway.

Other witnesses said they saw emergency services rushing to the scene.

Amid the confusion, passengers stuck on stationary planes shared what they could see on Twitter.

One user said: "No flights in or out at Stansted due to ‘incident on the runway’.

“Emergency vehicles flashing their lights in the distance."

Another added: "So Stansted has shut the runway. Two hour delay. FML."

Someone else confirmed: "Nothing leaving or landed at Stansted Airport due to a 'incident.'"

Sam Long, who was heading to Vienna, also claimed he heard a "loud bang".

A Stansted Airport spokesman told Daily Star Online flights had been suspended after a plane was forced to abort its take-off at around 8pm.

It is thought that the plane had an engine malfunction, he added.

Emergency services are waiting for clearance to remove the stricken plane from the runway.
