Bombardier offers Bangladesh to sell 2 more Dash Q400 aircraft

DHAKA, Dec 31, 2019 (BSS) – Canadian Bombardier Inc has offered Bangladesh to sell two more Dash Q400 turboprops aircraft after delivering three brand new same modeled 74-seater narrow-body plane to state-owned Biman Bangladesh Airlines in 2020.

“Bombardier informed us that they would like to sell two more Q400 aircraft to Biman Bangladesh Airlines. If they (Bombardier) will give us good offer, we may consider their proposal (to purchase two more turboprops),” State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M Mahbub Ali told BSS today.

Ali said the government would like to increase the Biman’s short-haul fleet to grab a share of the growing domestic market, now dominated by local private airlines. “We have already set a meeting with Bombardier to discuss the matter farther,” he added.

A delegation includes officials of Bombardier Commercial Aircraft and Canadian High Commission in Bangladesh will hold the meeting with the state minister and concern high officials of the ministry and Biman Bangladesh Airlines at secretariat on Thursday next in this regard.

Biman acquired two Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 planes under dry lease for five years in April 2015 to resume its domestic flight operations after a three-year pause as the national flag carrier was forced to shut down all domestic sector due to scarcity of aircraft in 2012.

Currently, the Biman Bangladesh airlines is operating flight to five domestic destinations with these two rented Dash 8 aircraft where two private carrier Novoair and US-Bangla airlines run flight to the country’s all seven domestic destinations with much higher frequency.

“We need more short hurl aircraft to increase frequencies in our all seven domestics routes as well as different regional destinations like Kolkata and Yangon,” Ali said.

Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry’s official sources said the Bombardier Commercial Aircraft informed them that if the Bangladesh government wants, they would be able to deliver two more brand new Dash Q400 within 24 months.

On August 1 in 2018, the state owned Biman Bangladesh Airlines signed G2G (government-to-government) agreement with Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC) to purchase three Dash Q400NG series aircraft from Bombardier as the lease period of the current two turboprop to be expired by mid 2020.

Bombardier is scheduled to deliver the three Dash single-aisle, single-class plane each to the Bangladesh government in March, May and June in 2020.

“As per the agreement, Bombardier will provide us substitute aircraft, if they fail to deliver their brand new Q400 plane as per schedule date,” Ali said.

Based on the list price of the Q400 aircraft, the order is valued at approximately US$106 million, Bombardier said in a statement after signing the agreement.

On November 15, 2016, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved a proposal of Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry allowing Biman Bangladesh Airlines to procure three aircraft from the Canadian firm.

As per the fleet expansion plan, Biman this month added two brand new Boeing 787-9 dream liners that raised its current aircraft number at 18 (12 owned and 6 rented).

In 2008, Biman Bangladesh Airlines signed a US$2.1 billion agreement with Boeing to purchase 10 new aircraft and as per the deal, Boeing has delivered all the aircraft- four 777-300ER, two 737-800 ER and four Dreamliners Boeing 787-8 – to Biman.

This Quebec company alwaya keep asking for government handouts...good to see they finally start exporting on poorer countries instead just focus on usa and Canada.

This company should be encouraged by other countries because smaller planes are also a needed component in an airline business when the ranges are short. BIMAN also needs this plane for its local and regional operations.

Bangladesh today expressed interest to buy two more Dash 8Q-400 turboprop narrow body aircrafts from Canadian plane manufacturing company Bombardier and asked the Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC) to send a formal proposal with fair offer in price.

Bangladesh made the proposal as Canada government’s trade body offered to sell two more 74-seater Dash 8Q-400 aircrafts after delivering the ordered three brand-new aircrafts of the same model to Biman Bangladesh Airlines this year.

This was discussed today while a Canadian delegation led by Canadian High Commissioner in Dhaka Benoit Préfontaine held a meeting with State Minister for Civil Aviation M Mahbub Ali and Senior Secretary of the ministry Mohibul Haque at the Secretariat.

“We would like to buy more short-haul aircrafts for our domestic routes. So, we told the Canadian Commercial Corporation to give us formal proposal … if we get fair price, we are positive to buy two more planes from them,” Haque said.

The civil aviation and tourism secretary said the government will try to negotiate to purchase the two Dash 8Q-400 aircrafts at a lower price than the rate of the three same modelled planes ordered previously.

“If we buy from them (Bombardier), we will go for either lower or same price of the ordered planes … definitely not more than those (three purchased Dash 8Q-400s),” he said.

On August 1 in 2018, Bangladesh purchased three Dash 8Q-400 aircrafts from Canada under G2G (government-to-government) agreement.

Bombardier is scheduled to deliver the three single-aisle planes to Biman this year in March, May and June.

In the meeting, Bangladesh also sought Canadian cooperation in starting Biman’s flight between Dhaka and Toronto, ministry official said.

The Canadian delegation assured that Canada will provide ‘fifth freedom’ to Biman Bangladesh Airlines on its proposed new routes on Dhaka-Manchester-Toronto and Dhaka-Rome-Toronto.

The ‘fifth freedom’ is the right to carry passengers from one’s own country to a second country and from that country onward to a third country.

Actually, I have become fond of the look of Bombardier planes with its two propellers (?) though it is not a propeller-driven plane. Sometime in the past @Nilgiri explained something about this new kind of engine but with my tiny brain, I could not really understand all those mechanical complexes.

Biman should have bought a newer micro-size commuter jet from Bombardier like the Airbus A220 (Bombardier developed this but Airbus markets it). This aircraft is plenty nice to be used as a larger capacity back-fill for the Dash 8-Q400 for domestic flights, and also as a convenient B738 fill-in for longer regional legs like Dhaka-Kathmandu or Dhaka-Delhi (which the Q400 cannot do).

Currently B738's are used for CTG or SYL domestic flights which are way overkill (and impractical in terms of fuel consumption per seat-mile) for these legs. These newer breed of commuter jets (Airbus A220, Embraer E170-E2 or E190-E2 versions, Sukhoi SSJ100) are so fuel efficient - Biman could easily do Dhaka-S'pore or Dhaka-Dubai with these things in a pinch.

Airbus A220 series were recently approved for 180 min. ETOPS (non-stop flight) recently so that means you can fly from London to NYC or US coast-to-coast....but I doubt a lot of airlines are going to use them in such a manner.

And there is a larger capacity A220-500 planned as an A320 Neo replacement.

By the way Bombardier sold the Q400 turboprop line to China I believe...

Good thinking getting more should reduce ticket prices enough for more public to consider using these to fly to destination instead of taking the bus or train like during eid

They teamed up with airbus to make the a220 regional jet. Gosh I love this jet. Apart from making some of the best private jets in the business. So I'll ignore your ignorance.

The a220 is going to be a market leader.

The airplane was previously known as BOMBARDIER C100 and C300. I've been following this for almost a decade through the planning phase. Airbus got involved and purchased the program after Bombardier faced near-sanctions in the US for Canadian govt. help in manufacturing.

Do read up the history.

A220 is just a rebrand on the C series as @Bilal9 has said.

I know but it will dominate regional jet market. Even beating Embraer E series
