KARACHI: As consumption of oily foods and lack of exercise prevail in Pakistan, every fourth person in the country is obese, said Aga Khan University (AKU) gastroenterology associate professor Dr Rustam Khan.

He was speaking at a session on nutrition awareness at the varsity. According to him, obesity is on the rise in Pakistan as consumption of oily foods and lack of exercise are the norm.

Talking about the body mass index (BMI) cut-off for Asians, he said a BMI greater than 27 indicates obesity while one less than 18.5 hints at malnourishment. He added that BMI between 18.5 and 22.9 is the healthy range for individuals in Asian countries.

According to AKU medicine associate professor Dr Romaina Iqbal, one should be concerned about weight as it is often the root cause of vascular and arthritis diseases. Explaining the relationship of age and weight, she said that the common perception in society is that it is acceptable for an elderly person to be overweight. “Weight has nothing to do with age,” she said, adding that it is never appropriate to transgress your ideal BMI range. According to her, one should make it a habit to weigh herself/himself at least once a month.

Iqbal also shared her findings of 2010 on Karachi. “Up to 58 per cent of the men in urban settings in Karachi are obese,” she said. “Likewise, the strength of women in the same category is 66 per cent.”

Talking about child obesity, AKU Hospital clinical dietician Sidra Raza shared some studies on obese children. “More than 155 million children worldwide are overweight and obese,” she said. She stressed the importance of controlling obesity in children as it has a direct impact on their achievement in school. “Children who are obese lack self-esteem and confidence as society tends to reject them,” she said.

Nutritionist Dr Mozamila Mughal was of the view that a good diet is essential for good health. According to Mughal, the best diet is one that accommodates all food groups such as bread, fruits, meat, milk and vegetables. “The largest portion of your plate should be vegetables and fruits for maximum vitamins and minerals intake,” she said. “The other two small portions should be of meat and carbohydrates which can be taken in the form of rice, grains and lentils.” She further said that seasonal fruits should always be taken as their composition of nutrients is such that they are best suited to a particular season.

The Pakistani diaspora is also extremely unhealthy. Our foods are so oily and we eat so much fatty stuff that the horrendous conditions of our bodies are no surprise really.

An excerpt from the NHS website:
People from south Asian communities can be up to six times more likely to have diabetes than the general population. Pakistani women are especially at risk. The risk of dying early from coronary heart disease is twice as high among South Asian groups compared with the general population. Experts aren’t sure why this is the case, but it may be linked to diet, lifestyle and different ways of storing fat in the body.

Pakistanis tend to store fat in our bellies, which is perhaps the worst. Some people genetically store more fat around arms, thighs and buttocks. South Asian have really bad genetics when it comes to storing fat. And obviously our diet is horrific to say the least. Seriously Pakistani foods should only be eaten on special occasions, but we eat for every single day, at least 3 times a day lol.

Eating oily and ghee soaked foods coupled with lack of exercise and the result is this.
Our cuisine is unhealthy with out any doubt.

This is news to me, I don't see a lot of people who I would consider obese, overweight possibly but definitely not obese. Or maybe I just live among very healthy people, who knows?

Guys after seeing the snaps being posted here one thing I must clear,

Obesity != Overweight . You can be obese with a perfect weight

But what about your pot belly ?

Sitting at a desk and gulping donuts after donuts ain't gonna give you a 6-pack-in-hiding* like mine !

*I've hidden it with a layer of fat to ward off the evil eye ! :sarcastic:

I've got no six pack but I don't have a pot belly either, at 13% bfp I am teetering on the very edge of revealing a six pack but going beyond that requires more than exercise and cardio, it requires an intense dieting effort that I can't put in because it requires eating clean for over a month at least which is impossible because I can't cook for my life and what I get are 'salan' which are 2/3rd oil.

males must be slim/muscular, no doubt.... but i find the idea of turning ladies into thin variations of male bodies very ghey... females must look female which means they are chubby.

Janaaab its just a game of calorie in vs calorie out !

Do some deadlifts....try out a squat program, maybe throw in a few weighted pull ups and wrap up the whole program with 10-12 x 100 m sprints - Your six pack will start showing in no time !

Butt Sahab since when have you become a gym buff? :p:

I have been in this game for quite a while now, not every calorie is the same so the 'calorie in, calorie out' formula doesn't work as easy as it sounds, quick weight loss not only breaks down towards quick weight gain but you also end up sacrificing some muscle in the process.

I have been lifting weight for a few years; but I always end up injuring my lower back so I have to stop it periodically ! :(

Now a days I am more into push ups (single arm, diamond, plyometric - when I can do them) and sprinting - They're actually working out better than I anticipated....I feel more quick on my feet and lighter now than I used to when I was lifting weights a few months ago ! :)

But if you're really into proper strength training; I recommend you check out Stronglifts 5 x 5 program...on stronglifts website - All compound functional exercises...all will build strength and best of all you'd look great and not like those Captain Upper Bodies who look like as if they've got bosoms that'll give any lady a run for her money due to far too many chest exercises, have biceps the size of small water melons and yet legs that would look out of place on a lady let alone a man with that much of a bloated upper body. Funnily enough many of these huge bicep....puffed chest guys are remarkably weak - Their deadlift, bench press, barbell rows or overhead press numbers are sometimes laughable !
