Star Online Report

Biman Bangladesh Airlines today got its fifth Boeing 737-800 aircraft making the total number or its aircraft to 14.

The plane, leased from the aviation lease and finance company ALAFCO in Kuwait, landed at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 3:25am this morning, according to a press release from Biman.

Another plane of the same model is also scheduled to be added to Biman's fleet in June this year.

Biman has taken the initiative of adding these new aircraft to its fleet to expand its network and increase routes, the release added.

In line with this initiative, Biman Bangladesh Airlines has already resumed its Dhaka-Delhi direct flights on May 13, over four years after it suspended flight operations on the route.

I have read somewhere that BIMAN has a shortage of planes after the Rangoon accident involving a jet that skidded on the tarmac. This new plane is probably to substitute that one. Very quick action, then.

Biman needs to order planes in numbers as there is clearly demand..... 14 planes is really nothing to serve a country of 165m people.

If the likes of Ethiopian airlines can maintain such a huge fleet proving 1st class service there is no reason what Biman can not do the same.

Biman can service demand with the current fleet and the ones on order(7 more planes) for maybe the next 5 years.

Remember that there was only a 50% growth in passenger numbers from 1990 to 2009 in BD.
In the last 10 years there has been 150% growth and this will rise even higher in the future.

Ethiopian airlines is one of the best run airlines in the 3rd world and Biman used to be one the worst.

As BD long haul international passenger traffic sky-rockets Biman will need to place orders soon for wide-body aircraft and I would like them to go for Airbus(A350) to get a mixed Boeing-Airbus fleet.

Privatize BIMAN and it will be of the first-rate airlines sometime in the future. Now, it is "Sarkar ka Maal, Daria me Daal".

rongoon one was a prop... surely this isn;t for that route but could be wrong

Ethiopian is the best upcoming airlines that i heard of...
I really doubt if BIMAN could do the same....
not until crews become more professional... a lot changes... from uniform to food and there;s a stop to emplying aunties as cabin crew who couldn't help themselves if the day turns out to be bad

are there any new aircrafts ordered for BIMAN'? last i remember was all ordered durin 2008-2009 caretaker govt.

It's a shame with millions of expatriots Biman fleet is now at 14.
If I were to run Biman I would run it like Ryan Air or Emirates. Keep your flights to the most traveled destination for efficiency with the longest destination like England.

The airport needs to get major overhaul. The car parking is simply atrocious.

State run airline filled with corrupt idiots.
Same all over the world.
Biman needs to be privatised.

10 aircraft was ordered from Boeing ages ago....i assume they have all now been delivered..... when did we order more aircrafts? Is 7 boeing still to be delivered....

Two Boeing 787s and two 737s still to be delivered.
These should suffice to allow expansion for next 5 years, along with the 3 Bombardier Q400 turboprobs ordered late last year.

Biman's main problem is that it is government owned. It needs to be sold off to the private sector - sure some of BD's large industrial groups may be interested in buying it as long as the government gave them enough incentives. Not sure whether outright standard privatisation would work in BD currently.

BD offered it up for privatisation but never got any interest....

I agree Biman does need to be privatised.

Like I say enough incentives need to be offered to make Biman attractive.

BD government should offer to pay all outstanding loan repayments on
the 10 aircraft brought from Boeing in 2008 as an example and offer tax breaks for a limited time.

Then one of the large BD business groups can take it over. They keep some of the staff that actually have some competence and fire the rest. Main thing is to get an experienced foreign CEO who has good track record in the industry and they can then teach local BD'shis how to run an airline.

No offence to Ethiopia but if they can have a successful airline with a fraction of the GDP of BD, then so can BD.

Ethiopia does not intentionally damage the flights and send it abroad for overpriced repairs. Instead of buying flights they prefer expensive leasing as well!!

All airlines lease planes as it offers more flexibility over buying.

Anyway most of Biman's planes are purchased and this ratio will increase as the remaining 7 ordered come into service.
