Biggest deal with US flies into air pocket after India questions price

It still think once all reasons are properly explained to the IAF/MOD/GOI that this deal will go through and unto 15+ more ordered, this is a minor hiccup that has been overblown, it is possible (once again-MMRCA) life-cycle costs, spares, maintenance, infrastructure and training were not taken into account/were underestimated. Just look at the C-130-30js, your not telling me 6 cost $1bn! This included all of the above as it is a completely new airframe so it has to be started broom scratch but all following planes will be cheaper as the set up costs will not be incurred. It's rather basic economics/common sense.

Well that is unless the IDIOTS at the FM don't get their grubby hands on it-MTA (A330)?

If the article is correct, IAF simply did a bad job in getting the right infos about the aircraft, including its cost for an export customer like India. That's what i criticised about the deal from the start, because no matter what the air chief have stated, there was no real comparison of the aircraft with others, because not even an RFI was sent out to other vendors.
Kuwait ordered 1 x C17 for a system price (including spares, training...) close to $700 millions, so a price tag of $580 millions if we buy 10, seems to be reasonable. If IAF really thought we get the aircraft for $300 millions only, there is no one else to blame then them, because that is totally unrealistic!

Exactly that's what I was trying to say- Boeing isn't stupid enough to charge hugely different prices for the same product, especially when India is such a HUGE market to them. The fact is spares and other stuff I have stated ^^^ were not taken into account so when Boeing came back with the price they were a little surprised. I think though this deal will go through given the IAF's unique requirement which seems to fit the C-17 perfectly, once the MOD gets their head's together.

25+ C-17s in IAF by 2020-22 !!!

Possible, but a big mistake imo, because over $500 millions each aircraft is too expensive and the money could be used better, with more outcome for our own industry. With C17s India will remain a buyer, just like we are at C130J, or P8I, while we had offers to be a partner at A400, AN 70, or IL 476.

Its good that this time it was caught earlier otherwise after a year CAG would release a report and instead of blaming IAF and MOD people will talk about CAG on the forums...

This is a no brainer. India should get the best possible aircraft instead of joint venture or TOT with lesser products. Why paying for TOT when India do nothing with the technology anyway.....

Wrong, Indian forces needs the best possible aircraft for their requirements, not te best possible aircaft that is available and they don't have the reqirements that NATO, or US forces have, which makes high numbers of C17s needed.
Also we already develop Saras, RTA and MTA, so ToT of latest avionics, engines and other systems are more than welcomed to improve our capabilities in this area. The C17 is a great aircraft, but only a good choice for India, if the cost can be justified, otherwise beeing a partner of the A400 is more benifical for Indian forces and Indian industry.
