Biblical 'Plague of LOCUSTS' will hit Israel during Passover marking escape from Egypt

A PLAGUE of Biblical proportions is set to hit the Holy Land just in time for one of Judaism's most important religious festivals.

Enormous swarms of locusts have been creeping across the Middle East and North Africa in recent months.

Now, experts at the UN warn the plague is likely to converge on the Holy Land during the Jewish festival of Passover.

Locusts began swarming on the Red Sea coast of Eritrea and Sudan in December.

Now the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) reports in the past two weeks there has been an escalation in second-generation hatching and hopper-band formation along both sides of the Red Sea.

At the end of January, one huge swarm arrived in Iran.

Ground and air crews have been scrambled to control infestations of locusts in Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

In January, Daily Star Online reported the chilling moment a locust plague descended on Islam's holiest city Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

"Swarms are often tens of square kilometres in size," the UN FAO explained in a statement.

A swarm of just one square kilometre could eat the same amount of food in one day as 35,000 people.

The FAO warned a swarm the size of a small city "can consume what half the population of Mali or Niger would eat in a single day."

Swarms can contain up to one billion locusts and can travel up to 93 miles in one day.

Officials have warned further rains in Israel could lead to an even larger outbreak.

In 1915, a locust swarm in then-Palestine led to regional famine.

Jewish people will celebrate Passover from April 19 to April 27 to mark the Israelite's escape from slavery in Egypt with Moses — as described in the Old Testament of the Bible.

In order to make the Pharoah free the Israelites, God is supposed to have reaped vengeance on Israel through 10 increasingly worse plagues.

One of these was a huge swarm of locusts which ravaged Egypt's crops.

The final plague was the killing of the Egyptian first-born children.
