Home Minister Shahara Khatun said on Tuesday that Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) will be divided into four regions to bring dynamism in its activities.

Talking to reporters at BGB headquarters after a reception for 57 freedom fighters having the titles of Bir Shrestha, Bir Uttam, Bir Bikram and Bir Pratik.

The family members of the freedom fighters attended the reception at the BGB headquarters at Pilkhana.

The government is considering deployment of the border guards to the UN Peacekeeping Mission alongside the police and army, she said.

Its a useless organization. So much for Border guards..

@ If BGB is raised from 12 to 16 sectors, it means 4x3=12 more BGB Battallion. Woa !!! And Toybot is telling that it is useless organisation ? You are talking about mutiny ? Who has instigated it ? It was you !!!!!!!!!!!!

Nop. No one knows nothing.

Bangladeshis blame RAW, and Indians blame Jamat/BNP.

No proper investigation was carried out. We might never uncover the truth.

No am talking about its ineffectiveness in stopping smugglers from crossing into India, the very job its meant for, border policing.

@ My dear Roybot, our BGB is far superior than BSF. Reasons are given below:

a. If we look in the past in the 60s during the Pakistan times this EPR carried out one operation in Asalong some where in Chittagong Hil Tracts, the BSF was beaten badly.

b. During the Pakistan's times EPR was always manned by Army officers instead of police officers like in BSF. It has lot of advantages. In times of crisis I mean during the war time this para-military force can easilly merge with the army. Their weapon and army's weapon are almost the same. Even during Bangladesh times whatever small skirmises took place with India it was always seen that BDR's performace in comparison with BSF was good.

c. During the "Boraibari operation" in 2000 the BSF were beaten back.

Am not going to bother with superior or inferior, their job is to stop people from crossing the border, and they are not doing that, so its a useless organization.

Hmm..

You are right.

Considering how long the War Crimes issue is going on, BD will never know what was behind the event. One cannot help but wonder if the nation wants to know at all.

Or. let the next Govt come and ' criminals' will be found to suit the party in power.

Although BA Headquarter is in Dhaka, the troops are divided into more than 15 cantonements throughout the country. But, BDR/BGB troops were centered only in Pilkhana which is BGB Headquarter. Pilkhana is at the center of the Dhaka City and is spread over a big prime land between Dhanmondi and Azimpur. There were always about 10,000 troops residing in that Cantonement.

It is a timely decision that BGB be divided into four regional HQs, quite near the international border. Probably each of these regional HQs will be headed by a Brigadier to be appointed by army HQ. The entire BGB will be headed by a Major General, same as it is now.

@ The decision to organized into 4 regional HQ is not a new one. It was made in 1991/2 during the BNP regime. Some more Battalion were raised during that time and some changes were made. But the question is if you suddenly disclose all the master plan in a day that is not fair. In a year or two we just cannot make from 12 sectors to 16 sectors. It is a long term master plan which has to be implemented continuously. We just cannot make in a day.
