The list of power projects inaugurated by the PM and other dignitaries are many - Bhasha, Nandipur, Gadani, and so on. The latest in the list is a Solar Park is inaugurated by PM Nawaz Sharif. But where is all this electricity? Solar energy has been allowed an upfront tariff of Rs. 19 per unit. At this cost, is solar energy affordable? On the other hand the Neelam-Jhelum Hydropower Project completion is getting delayed due to the non-availability of required funding - but the Government can spend 50 billion rupees on the Pindi Metro Bus project?

The problem with the Sharif government is and has always been the lack of transparency. So even when they launch a project, that might be for the public good, they are so opaque and so averse to advice or protest, that people just cant get behind the project to support or appreciate it. Solar power would be the way to go. Electricity generation, especially thermal power, is expensive, needs massive investments in infrastructure and it has been failing us since the 1970s. Rationality demands reducing the reliance on oil. LNG is difficult to import, using coal has environmental issues, using shale gas also has environmental issues attached with it, and wind power has transmission network challenges. Hydropower would be best and long lasting, and we have been shouting for Kalabagh to be built so that it can come online in the next decade, but no such projects are forthcoming.

The Quaid-e-Azam Solar Park (QASP) has been designed to generate a total of 1,000MW of electricity. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said that once completed, the QASP will be the biggest solar power project in the world and that China provided a Rs2 billion concession on the project. This may explain the why this project was even begun. Maybe China will push us for better power provision, and that which has not been possible in the last thirty years will be made possible.

Many times we've seen this root problem of rulers' inability to prioritize resource allocation towards projects that more resources (add to the resource pool). Solar just isn't one of them.

They've banned new solar & wind because of high tariff - a lot of people pointed this out one year ago when this current project was being advertised as a success. Now they're going to build metro rail in lahore (one line) for $1.65bn....and they say they have no money for hydro electricity projects.

Their attitude is: too little too late, frequently very untimely decisions.

I am amazed how lahore is filled with banners and all for producing just 100 mw from this solar project. at most it will produce 600-650 mw if fully functional, while the short fall is 4600 mw as of yesterday, which is likely to rise to 8000-9000 mw

and they are claiming that 100 mw would roshan pakistan?

beside everything, 2 weeks ago nawaz sharif himself has banned solar and wind mill projects, as they are cost inefficient and expensive. #FacePalm on 100 mw that would turn the destiny of this nation..

above this nawaz sharif yet again said that "asay projects saray mulk kay chapay chappay per laga kar hum 2017-18 tak bijli ka bohran khatam kar daen gae.e.."

seriously, it wasnot funny Mr Prime minister !

Shoot all those who try to make Kalabagh or any project that is of National importance, a political battle or a ground to spread their cheap propaganda, these people cannot think Pakistani and have limited ethnic narrow mindedness at their disposal. Otherwise live the rest of your life with the reality that our generations will be cursing us for leaving them with a pandora's box.

And to expect something sensible, from these Sharif Bahis would be shame on me. Lack of logical ranking of projects, allocation of funds and resources, and to start projects to secure their future vote banks for their royal offspring is enough to certify their competency.

tarrif closed for qasp Phase 1 is Rs 13.50/kwt hr . It is quite reasonable for a mix in the country with hydro , coal and green energy . While next 900 mwtts the rate / kwt hr would be lower as the ifrastructure is already available , bulk 900 mwts would be cheaper , so it is a good step towards green energy and to a country like us which is famine hit for power .

solar and wind has already been banned by nawaz sharif.

First this govt banned solar and wind power for high tarrif and then they started worlds biggest solar project. LOL

Also do some homework, Rs 13.50 per unit cost is at least 40% higher than any hydel power project in this country. Take that.

Can any PML-N supporter post the progress of power Projects initiated by PML-N along with evidence of progress?

Ganja brothers should stop wasting public money for their own publicity. If they are that much interested in publicity than it's better for them to become poster boys of birth control campaign.

Politicians & the media thrive on sensationalism and seldom look at things objectively. Additionally, people keep forgetting that 100MW is the maximum output when sun is shining at full strength. It is less in the morning & in the evening & zero during the night. When calculated on yearly basis, average output from 100 MW capacity plant would be about 35MW only. In a country where power shortfall could be as high as 6,000 MW, how additional 100MW is going to make much difference?

Solar power is still the most expensive way of generating power; however it is clean & therefore good for environment. Most efficient use of solar energy is still thru solar panels on individual houses as it eliminates distribution costs. Nevertheless it is better than nothing and one has to admit that compared to Zardari, governance overall under Nawaz Sharif is better, albeit not by much.

this project is very shady . Allotted without bidding, not to lowest bidder, aloted to bidder who had not done a single power project and is a telecom company , who sublet it to contractor who is black listed in 5 countries. u can google all the information .

I would be pleased with 10000 M watts project but if there is no corruption in it. Solar energy is very very expensive , we cant afford it Taking loan and making expansive projects is easy no wonder our loan has been double after every decade

Nothing wrong here then, its consistent with our prior years practices :enjoy:

Why not introduce "Prepaid" system for utilities, that way if you pay you will get. And it would reduce the line losses like theft etc.

Is it costly?

What happens if people are unable to "recharge" their account due to emergency and strikes?
That's why it's all under billing system.

Line losses can be reduced if we hire proper people to oversee connections and go underground with the lines.

Bro I can pay my bills online through my bank these days. With all this easy paisa etc and telecommunication boom this underlined bold cannot be a valid excuse.

Most Pakistani don't have a bank account, let alone online banking.
Easypaisa etc also needs a working retailer (since the last time I was in Pakistan). Where do you get one when shop have been forced to shut down during strikes?

Strikes don't shut down the whole of Pakistan dear, it would be something similar to stocking your groceries. And these days (except for me I because of my job) most Pakistanis carry a smart phone, I have no idea what "Wats App" is but I heard a security guard saying my cell is broken Wats app is not working fine :D

The tariff of Quaid e Azam solar park is Rs. 18.03 which is higher than Hubco, an independent power producer operative on furnace oil, has a tariff rate of Rs. 8.46 .... Where the hell in this world solar energy is expensive than electricity produced from oil based power plants...
