A Bangladesh Army soldier was killed and 11 others were wounded when a bomb exploded at a firing range in Bandarban during a training exercise yesterday.

Air Force helicopters flew the injured soldiers to Combined Military Hospital in the capital immediately after the incident took place around 10:30am, according to a release from the Inter-Services Public Relations.

The body of deceased soldier Jahidul Islam of Bandarban’s Lama upazila was handed over to the army after an autopsy in the afternoon, said Prottosh Paul Tripura, resident medical officer of Bandarban Sadar Hospital.

Jahidul’s elder brother Mejbah Uddin told our Bandarban correspondent that Jahidul talked to his mother around 10:00am and said he would come home for the Eid with new clothes for everyone.

Jahidul was the fourth of six siblings, he said.

Eleven others were also injured in the incident

A member of the army have been killed in blast in at a firing range in Bandarban.

The deceased is Jahedul Islam, 28.

Bandarban Superintendent of Police Zakir Majumdar confirmed the news to Dhaka Tribune.

Eleven others injured were flown to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka for treatment.

The incident occurred around 11am on Friday, according to the police.

The blast occurred when the army members came across an abandoned bomb at a firing range in the Amtoli area of Sualok union in Bandarban Sadar upazila.

The injured are all members of the Comilla Cantonment 16 Para Battalion.

Firing practice was supposed to be held in the area on Saturday. The army members were cleaning the area for the event when the abandoned bomb went off.

Md Shahin Mia, a policeman working at the Baitul Izzat Training Center—operated by Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB)—said: “They were initially brought to the Baitul Izzat Training Center for medical treatment and later sent to Dhaka CMH.”

The army is currently guarding the Amtoli area, where the blast suddenly went off.
