Barter Trade with Iran

I am amazed Pakistan has not taken advantage of being a border country to a major oil producer, and yet still pays to ship over from the Gulf.

There must be a reason why it does not happen, it makes too much sense to have not been done.
One word "vassalage",or if you prefer "client state".Basically a nation or collection of nations who are under the influence,be it political,military,economic or all of these of a more powerful state with probably the best example being the old cold war era soviet or eastern bloc.The west of course had its blocs as well and pakistan was/is a part of these.Tho with the end of the cold war and the rise of china the us is increasingly reaching out to india to try and balance this rise while distancing itself from pakistan,however it still exerts considerable influence over it.Pakistan for its part has begun to move ever closer to china but just cant seem to quit the us,probably because china is just not willing to offer it as much as the us used to.Sadly for most nations the price of vassalage is usually very high with the vassal state having to put the interests of its overlord ahead of its own no matter what the costs that may entail for it.

Well,I guess then you can enjoy your 4.5 gigawatt[4500 megawatts] shortfall in electricity production and all the economic losses and social problems that it imposes then,cant you?:azn:
Or maybe just for once pakistan could actually put its OWN interests first for a change,rather than those of the west and the gulfies,and finish its part of the ip pipeline and with all of the gas that it would supply then pakistan could have the chinese build it gas fired power plants in pakistan that could generate all of that much needed electricity......or you could just continue to enjoy those power cuts in the middle of summer I`m suppose..:flame:
I`m sure your good western:usflag: and gulfie:ph34r: "friends" will appreciate your needless suffering on their behalf.......or not[lol!]:coffee:
Have a nice day;)
There is no electricity shortage in Pakistan now and a quite a few projects are near completion so 1000's of MW will be added still I would welcome cheap electricity from Iran but security comes first. They cannot keep cosying up with India and letting their land used against Pakistan. They have to come clean.

I imagine the iranians would probably say the exact same thing about their security concerns vis a vis pakistan and its relations with irans enemies the us and the gulfies.
Its a pretty simple choice really,both nations can look at improving their mutual economic opportunities together....or they can simply fixate on each others political relationships with third party nations while achieving absolutely nothing....apart from giving their respective enemies an easy win and a good laugh that is.
Something to think about...

I agree. Good opportunity is around the corner. People all too often ignore one jarring reality. Money. You need it and governments need it. Iran just like Pakistan needs it. The single biggest source of revenue for Iran is oil, about $50 billion a year. There is nothing superior about our oily neighbours and that includes Arabs/Iranians. The only thing differant is they have oil which allows them to act big and look down at us.

Right now Trump knowing that money underpins everything is about to strangle Iran. The oil sanctions have already reduced Iranian income by $10 billion. Right now US has refused to extend anymore waivers to India, China, Turkey etc. This means they will not buy Iranian oil from May 2nd. That is going to have catastrophc effect on Iran. They could lose that $50 billion leaving them even more bankrupt then Pakistan. That offers Pakistan fantastic opportunity to use this to our advantage.

By the way Trump has done his homework. I saw a interview of his advisor on Iran. US knows that India, China etc need to buy oil from somewhere. So Trump has worked with Saudia Arabia and UAE to prepare extra oil and come this May they will pump out extra oil to offset Iranian oil. USA gets Iran screwed, Saudia gets Indian, Chinese markets.

Things are not looking good for Iran. This means Pakistan is in a position to leverage the situation. And India can kiss goodbye to that wet dream called 'Chah Bahar'.

@Tom M

Ain't you counting the chicken too early before they even hatch?? :-)

FYI, India always have a plan B as far as diplomatic relations are concerned. As I say always, we have long mastered the art of taming and keeping the lion and lamb in the same cage and yet reap benefit from both. :woot:

I think Iranian opinion have generally been unfair on this toward Pakistan. Pakistan has generally been one if very few country with positive reputation of Iran, but I think unfortunately it is not positive anymore.

Pakistan need economic development and I think Iran missed an opportunity to help in that regard during 2000s. Economic integration would have helped both but it was always dealt with coldly by Iran for various reasons.

I have no issues with enhanced trade with Iran, however they will be under some pretty severe USA sanctions....So open trade will be difficult. I expect a robust under the table smuggling. Iran provides crude we provide meats and other food commodities. Trade routes to Turkey, Russia, Iraq and C Asia through Iran is also important to us.

@Tom M

if pakistan tries to leverage Iran USA, UAE and KSA can remind them easily of how much leverage they have
it is a 2 way street

We need to realize that Iran and Pakistan share a border, and they do not need a 'Pipeline' to export/import oil. What I mean is that if Iran is willing to export oil at half the price of international market to Pakistan, then oil can be transported via trucks and other vehicles using back lanes - it is not hard.
Good for the folks in the region. They have been suffering a lot...

The entire regional trade (and what valuable items they are) is being offered on a gold platter to Pak...

One thing appears to be coming clear. Iran is i deep trouble. I had a good discussion with a Iranian acquaintance who just came back from visit to Iran. He tells me, inflation is eating into everything. Even middle class are struggling, the poor are in desperate situation and things are sliding down more. There is significant resentment against the mullahs. The regime is ruling now by relying on the security apparatus. And the government is riven with factions all grinding against each other.

The Yanks are probably smelling this and are tightning the screw even more so it will be interesting how things pan out over the next six months as the oil sanctions bite hard ...

Looks like the Last Days of the Shah are playing out again....

I really don't want another war in the region and I don't want any harm to Iran either but I want all the culprits of terrorist attacks in Baluchistan be punished whether they came from Iran or NDS.

Iran always plays on wrong pitch and on the wrong side. I am not sure what they want to prove. They have been caught red handed so many times. For example, Baloch terrorist groups, Uzair baloch and RAW agents active in Iran planning to destabilize Pakistan.
They need to stop allowing India/Raw to use their territory to launch attack using Baloch insurgent groups against Pakistan.
