Bangladesh mourns loss of "dear friend" in Kim Jong Il - Monsters and Critics

Dec 19, 2011, 13:34 GMT

Dhaka - Bangladeshi leaders on Monday sent their condolences to North Korea, saying the death of leader Kim Jong Il was an 'irreparable' loss.

In separate letters to North Korean Prime Minister Choe Yong Rim, Bangladeshi President Muhammad Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed expressed shock at Kim's 'untimely demise.'

'The people of DPR Korea have lost a great leader and we have lost a dear friend,' said Zillur Rahman.

'Our hearts are with the members of the bereaved family and the people of DPR Korea, and we pray that they will be able to bear this irreparable loss with courage and fortitude,' Hasina said.

How come north korea is our dear friend when we dont even have relations with them?? I am sure 96% of north koreans dont know where or even what is Bangladesh

As far as I know bangladesh has business relation with north korea and north korea is involved with some small scale construction project in bangladesh. Obviously without friendly relation north korea would not get any project work in bangladsh.

Long time ago.
MHMP was basically the brainchild of late President Ziaur Rahman, who during his visit to DPR of Korea requested the then North Korean leader to help Bangladesh in mining sector. Later, when BNP formed government in 1992 with Khaleda Zia as the Prime Minister, North Korean delegation visited Bangladesh and finalized the matter thus signing a Memorandum of Understanding. After several month efforts from both sides, contract for the project was signed thus entrusting the North Korean Nam-Nam Corporation for implementation of the project. After almost 16 years of challenging work, Nam-Nam Corporation completed the project and handed it over to Petro Bangla on May 25 last year. Commercial production in the project has already started. It is expected that, the project shall be able to produce 1.65 million tons of hard rock annually thus saving more than US$ 360 million of foreign exchange. Moreover, according to experts, if the production of the project could be diversified in establishing a plant to cut and produce high quality granite tiles, it would meet the local demand as well as open a new vista of opportunity for Bangladesh in getting huge income from the export trade.

Energy Bangla - Bangladesh: A Prospective Project under Threat

There are many other projects that I read in a news paper before coming to canada. If I am not wrong bal signed agreement with north korea in 1999 for mutual cooperation for different business projects.

They have nothing better to do? Pissing off South Korea is not cool.

As long as BD is interested in acquiring ballistic missiles and various other arms and ammunition, friendship with NK is good but BD is looking for the overall development of the nation SK is the way to go. One should chose their friends as well as enemies wisely.

We don't need ballistic missiles. We need ballistic diplomacy. It's good if we can work with both without pissing off either of them. However, if we have to choose one, let it be SK. They have the capacity to import more and invest more. :D

1.BD is very close to ROK - even in defense. However, we were always close to DPRK also. The two peoples of Korea are close among themselves, and it is a matter of time before they reunite and emerge as second only to China in Asia.

2. Obviously DPRK's mily innovations in eqpt and tactics should interest BD. Should BD need to acquire nukes with delivery system, then DPRK is a potential source.
