Bangladeshi pirates attacked three Indian trawlers in the Bay of Bengal killing three fishermen, including a father and a son, and hijacked one of these vessels holding 14 fishermen captive.

Nine fishermen were also injured in the firing by the eight pirates late last night off Kenduakhali in the Bay of Bengal, about 350 km from here, police said on Saturday.

The three dead fishermen were identified as Sripon Das, his father Dulal Das and Monomaran Das, police sources said.

Fishermen caught eight pirates who were part of the group which intercepted the three trawlers but three managed to escape, the sources said.

The captured sea brigands were taken to Kulpi in South 24 Parganas by fishermen in the early hours today and handed over to the police which is interrogating them.

According to the police, 14 trawlers, each with 14 to 15 fishermen on board, had set sail for the Bay of Bengal on Friday morning.

The pirates, who came in a motorised boat, attacked three of the trawlers, Ma Basanti-I, Ma Basanti-II and Ma Tara, which had fallen behind at Kenduakhali at 10:30 am and opened fire killing three fishermen and injuring ten others.

The fishermen who died and were injured were onboard Ma Basanti-I.

that’s tragic. May the dead rest in peace. It must be devastating for the women of the family.

I must say that the news is confusing. One part says they have 14 hostages the other says Fishermen captured some and handed over to police.

If they took 14 fishermen hostage then do they still have them with the “Ma Basanti 1” boat? These are dangerous waters up to the far east where many luxury Yachts have been attacked and the owners hacked and tossed to the sea.

Fishing is a seasonal thing and many of these fishermen and very poor and just make their ends meet. Along the Pakistani side both the Indian and Pakistani fishermen face a much less violent but still financially costly experience when their boats are seized by the opposing Navies as a tit for tat for “intruding” into others sea boundaries.

It is a case of biased reporting from the Indian media. It was probably just regular feud between fishermen from two countries over fishing territory, but when it was reported by India newspaper, it turned BD fishermen into pirates and painted a bias picture. You have to read through their lines with stuff coming from Indian media.

Good logic Sherlock! Regular fishermen carry weapons onboard their fishing boats, no?

I know you like to eat up Indian propaganda without any thought but try to think a bit more critical.

Where in the Indian article did it say they carried weapons? If the BD "pirates" had overwhelming weapons, they won't be "caught" by the Indian fishermen.
