DHAKA, Bangladesh — Shakib Al Hasan claimed four wickets and hit a rapid 58 to help Bangladesh win the opening match of the five-game limited-overs series by nine runs against New Zealand on Tuesday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

New Zealand needed 210 in 37 overs on the Duckworth/Lewis method after rain suspended play after 15 overs when New Zealand was 85-4 in reply to Bangladesh's 228.

But the visitors faltered at 200-8, despite Brendon McCullum's aggressive 61 off 45 balls, which included seven fours and two sixes.

Shakib had already had Jesse Ryder (21) caught by Roqibul Hassan when he removed fellow opener McCullum, and New Zealand steadily lost wickets throughout to damage its chances of victory.

Bangladesh sensed victory when Naeem Islam (2-30) trapped Ross Taylor (42) lbw in the 31st over, and the hosts held their nerve in a tense finish.

Kyle Mills (22) and Tim Southee (1) were unbeaten in the final over.

Shakib's man-of-the-match display, which also included the wickets of Grant Elliott (0) and Nathan McCullum (16), began earlier in the day when he rattled off 58 runs from 51 balls after Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat.

Shahriar Nafees chipped in with 35, while Junaid Siddique added 30.

Shakib was one of three wickets claimed by Mills, while Ryder, Daniel Vettori and Andy McKay took two each for New Zealand to restrict Bangladesh.

Vettori was particularly impressive, ending Nafees' promising innings in the first ball of his second over and ending with figures of 2-29.

Daniel Vettori: 'Very disappointed with the batting, Ryder and Watling set us up but from then on we were under pressure. The spinners for Bangladesh bowled very well, we have to adjust quickly. We have to post a decent score in the next game to put some pressure on them.'

Shakib al Hasan: 'Boys played really well, we kept taking wickets, Suhrawadi bowled fantastically. The only area we didn't bowl well was in the Powerplay. Our opening batsmen batted solidly and they gave us a good start, that's what we need.'

The Man of the Match award goes to Suhrawadi Shuvo for his 3 for 14 in 10 overs. 'It's always a good feeling to play well and win, the wicket was helping a lot and I was just putting the ball in the right place.'

So exactly 10 overs to spare for Bangladesh with 7 wickets in hand, a fully deserved win which means that this will be the first ODI series against a full-strength Full Member opposition that Bangladesh cannot lose. The bowlers set this victory up, especially the miserly Suhrawadi who also plucked three wickets. Nafees and Kayes then both batted with ease in reaching fifties. On the other hand the New Zealanders are really behind the eight-ball now, needing to win the last two games just to avoid a series defeat. Expect changes to the middle order for the next game, particularly in light of Stewart's head knock. You would have been forgiven today if you had thought the New Zealanders were actually Bangladesh given the way they played today. Hmm, so they can't lose the series now. So I am guessing this will be the first ODI series they won't lose against a test playing nation?

Btw, NZ are a really crap team in subcontinent. I remember how Pakistan used to slaughter them wholesale when they came to Pakistan. Nothing to take away from Bangladesh though, considering the fact that they usually always lose against test teams and to win two games in a row is good effort.
