Peeved by the inordinate delay in reaching agreements on water sharing with India, Bangladesh foreign minister Dipu Moni has said that at this rate the two neighbours would need "a millennium" to sign deals on 54 common rivers.

"In 40 years we have done (agreement) for one (Ganges), (and) are on the verge of doing another one (Teesta's water). At this rate we will need another millennium to conclude agreements on all 54 (rivers)," an official statement here quoted Moni as saying.

"We have to think how to accelerate the process of striking deals on rivers other than the Ganges," she said, pointing out that the present government has attached highest priority towards concluding water sharing treaty of Teesta.

"We finally believe that we shall be able to sign an interim agreement for sharing of the Teesta waters in near future," she said.

The two countries in the past several months witnessed several ministerial and official meetings on the Teesta water issue. After talks with finance minister Pranab Mukherjee three months ago, Moni said an interim deal on the water sharing in the major common river would be signed next year.

Bangladeshi media report, however, earlier reported that despite the absence of the treaty India released substantial quantum of waters opening up regulating systems in the upstream region in the lean period earlier this year infusing some sense of relief among farmers in the northwestern districts.

Under a 1983 understanding Bangladeshis supposed to get 36% share of the flow and India 39% allowing the rests to be flowed naturally.

Bangladesh and India had inked a landmark treaty on sharing of the Ganges water during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's previous 1996-201 tenure removing a major irk in bilateral ties.

My open question is.... who really think that this malaun indians really want to share or giving the legal right of water to it's neighboring country.... other than demanding we want this and we want that...appeasing usa to get some benefit and objecting when china come forward to help any of its neighbor and vice versa ????

By blocking water India produces more and we produce less production and then we have to buy foods from India at higher price. So blocking water is a double line business. Now forget about other natural destructions.

Our FM laments about only one deal with our big DADA India. India's long-term policy is 'Poor thy neighbour.' India's best friend AL should get something in reciprocity to the facilities it is giving to India. But, thinking of this lamenting, it seems India is not moving away an inch from its self-centered approach to any of the bi-lateral issues.

That is also my concern... many foreign policy analyst predicted that next world war will happen for water.... india is here completely acting as a selfish DADA... who wants everything but in return will not give anything...

China makes it official, says we are damming the Brahmaputra

China has finally acknowledged that it is building a massive hydel power project on the Brahmaputra before the river enters India. The first of six power generating units of the 510 MW Zangmu hydel project will be commissioned by 2014.

Beijing has assured New Delhi at the highest levels that the project is ‘run-of-the-river’, which would have no impact downstream — a line it repeated today after Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao raised the issue during the strategic dialogue.

Indian officials and experts, however, continue to be apprehensive about the project. The Chinese People’s Daily has reported that the dam’s “main function is power generation, but it can also be used for flood control and irrigation” — which, experts said, would require the diversion and storage of water.

“While power generation could either be a storage project or a run-of-the-river project, the flood control feature requires storage structures. And the irrigation feature would mean water would be diverted. These features are of concern to India,” said a senior official of the Ministry of Water Resources.

Ask Pakistanis on this forum. They can tell you about Indus Water Treaty. Or google it yourself.

Anyways why are you begging the Malaun (cursed) Indians in the first place? I suggest you declare war and take the water by force

You are talking as if the world is still in medieval era. Please ask your leaders the importance of trading and having agreements on as many fronts as possible. I think your government knows much better what any of us 3 are.
