I think, the above joint BD-US exercise has been completed. So, all these joint exercises between two unequal powers BD and US were a prelude to the proposed action in Afghanistan! It is disheartening to see our troops go under NATO command to kill our own people in Afghanistan, who are fighting to upheld their sovereignty similarly we did in 1971. People in BD should rise against this seemingly finalized decision. No to NATO, and yes to UNO.

The U.S seems to be desperately looking out for new allies to shoulder the burden of their seemingly endless afghan campaign.....as their nato allies in europe get increasingly disenchanted with the U.S Afghan strategy.....Bangladesh should use this as an opportunity to train with a technologically advanced military to the hilt ...but keep a cautious distance from uncle Sam and his grand designs ....lets see how the AL govt diplomatically handles the situation.....;)

However, I remember the utterings of the present PM of Bangladesh after coming to power. She said she would eliminate the ROOT of terrorism in the region. Although, USA was training our troops since long time ago, but, after AL came to power this time and the PM said so about terrorism, suddenly there were tens of BD-US joint military exercises, all in the name of disaster prevention.

I was wondering what these exercises meant for. Now, the answer seems to be very clear. USA was preparing our troops for Afghanistan. If it is really so, then it is too late to suggest that our troops should only learn from the USA, but the govt should not send them to Afghanistan. Because, it may have already been decided long before, and only under a mutual understanding USA has invested heavily to train our troops. Can we really say NO, now?

I hope, my prediction does not come true. And sometimes I think, why the Burmese do not mass a 50,000 troops along our border with them in our south-east. It could be a good excuse to say NO to Uncle Sam.

Right on the point. If BD send troop under the supervision of USA or Nato, Bangladesh will be view as enemy of Islam by hardcore Muslims from Afghan to Bd. As a result Bangladesh will be hit by same element similar to Pakistan.

Bangladeshis must not allow this suicidal move that will ultimately place us point of no return.

Another news caption from Financial Express below. It was printed on 18 September, 2010:

In that case its quite a trap ....however using some smart diplomacy ....the AL govt can try to withdraw troops from Afghanistan after a relatively short while....though sending troops there in the first place will create a negative perception of BD among several islamic countries and also unnecessarily antagonize the Pathans and maybe even the Arabs against Bengalis .....for plunging into a situation that does not concern them in anyway....

Thanks for your answer. But troops cannot be mobilized for a short period and also without a specific program that inludes a timetable as well. BD cannot just pull out its troops arbitrarily after a few months. Relationship with NATO and USA will go to the bottom in such a gesture.

BD should not send troops to Afghanistan under NATO.

Bangladeshi troops landed Lebanon shore (Israel Hizbullah fight) long before France could and before concreted decision whether to remain there or not. They left as soon as France arrived. So we could mobilize quick.. ;)
