Bangladesh to import gas from Myanmar, Malaysia

Kolkata, April 6 (IANS) Bangladesh is planning to import natural gas from Myanmar, Malaysia and Indonesia as new scientific calculations have shown that the country has limited gas reserve, a top diplomat of the country said Wednesday.

‘New scientific calculations have shown that there is limited gas reserve. We are planning to import gas from Malaysia and Indonesia. We are in talks with the Myanmarese government for importing gas,’ Bangladesh Deputy High Commissioner in Kolkata Mustafizur Rahman said in an interactive session organised by the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BNCCI).

Asked whether Bangladesh was willing to export its natural gas to India, he said: ‘If the reserve of gas is sufficient, then we can think about exporting gas.’

Rahman said Bangladesh was looking forward to full implementation of South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA) agreement to correct trade imbalance with India.

‘When SAFTA will be implemented fully, then exportable items from Bangladesh to India will be increased. We expect India to be more generous in expanding trade relation with us,’ he said.

During 2009-10, Bangladesh’s exports to India were $276.58 million and imports from India were $3,202.1 million.

‘Indian entrepreneurs can invest in Bangladesh in sectors like textile, ready-made garments, power generation and civil aviation,’ he said.

Bangladesh not in position to assure gas to Tatas: Dipolmat - Business News - News - MSN India

Kolkata, April 6 (PTI) The Bangladesh government is not in a position to assure a steady gas supply on a long-term basis to the Tatas, a diplomat of the neighbouring country said here today.

"We ourself are facing a gas shortage for which several industries are closed. We are trying to import gas and talking to a few countries, including Myannmar," Bangladesh deputy High Commissioner to India Md M Rahman told an interactive session with the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industry here today.

"In this situation how can you expect that we export or offer an assurance for steady supply to any Indian investor," he said when asked whether there was any improvement in the possibility of investment by Tatas in Bangladesh.

This, however, would not be a deterrent in improving bilateral trade between two countries which was expanding year on year, he said.
Rahman pointed out that the trade deficit continued to be in favour of India and it should take some measure to address it.

I just cant understand why this BAL government is promoting this false info that bangladesh does not have enough gas reserve. It is expected that there are plenty of gas reserves at the bay of Bengal. For the time being importing gas is ok. But not developing local gas reserve will be foolish. This hasina and BAL government will have to get rid of bharti centric foreign policy and idea like if bd has gas it will have to be exported to india.

The talk of importing Myammar gas is an old news. It remains on the newspapers, but not on the meetings between the two countries. Our novice FM sometimes goes to Myammar and throws a few sentences to the newsmen so that these are published in the local papers.

This is the 1st time that the name of Malaysia has come up. So, how BD is going to import? By building a 3000 km long pipeline or by turning it into LNG? The inefficient GoB has no real plan, so it talks and does not say about the mode of transport. So, it becomes just another meaningless hollow talk.

This is a diplomatic talk from a diplomat. Dont forget he was addressing to the Indians. He was rationalizing the reason BD is unable to export any gas to India.

However, in the process of hiding gas reserves from India, BD houses and industries are not getting gas, too. A country has the authority to sell or not to sell to a foreign country. By all information BD is not rich with gas. Even the US geological survey shows it may have a maximum of 32 trillion cft (tcf) of gas on shore. In comparison, the Iranian reerve is more than 900 tcf. Countries of middle-east, Iran, Russia and Turkmenistan are capable to export, and not BD.

I hope, India gets gas connection to the Turkmenistan reserve and forgets about BD gas. Only after this we should go for more digging onshore and offshore. Out of 32 tcf onshore gas, we have so far consumed about 6tcf. The remainder remains underground hiding to keep it away from the greedy Indians. We still do not know about the reserves in the BoB, but it must be more than 100 tcf.

India is just jealous of our development efforts and uses every means to deprive us of our wealth. All those TATA steel and fertilizer projects were meant for that. These offers are wrapped with sweets and sweet smiles trying to make us beleve these as genuine. But, we already know better than that.

Tata is private company. It invests due to profit motivation only. No other human emotions like jealousness involved.

You are right when you say TATA is a private company and is motivated by profits. But, somehow TATA's proposal to set a steel plant is not really what it says. In reality it is a SMELTING plant for steel. There would be no other sops like bar shop, plate shop, angle shop and absolutely nothing others.

So, this smelting shop would use our GAS, smelt the iron ores brought from india at 1600* Centigrade, and ship the unfinished goods to India, where it will be converted into many shapes in the shops. So, TATA steel plant proposal was nothing but a ploy by India Inc. to steal our gas.

Same is its proposal to build an urea fertilizer factory. Indian TATA would use our methane gas to produce urrea. But, then this urea would be exported to India and indian farmers use it to raise their agriculture output. This is also another ploy to steal our gas.

GoI/TATA Inc. pressure is so much that BD is being forced to hide its gas with a falsified data. But, this is also affecting our own consumption in industries and households. I wish india to get Turkmenistan gas upto Calcutta as soon as possible. We will then happily open our gas fields.

Iron ores from my state is being exported to china and japan for quite long. They import both raw ores, also sponge iron form. Whatever suits them, I wont blame them for taking Iron ores when we are selling them.
Bangladesh can simply say no to selling gas. If GoI can force you to sell, it can get info on actual data too.

And stop thinking TATA as Indian company, it is a global company now, it will invest wherever it gets better return.(Which is sad for India, because we need their investment more than others)
